Non-fiction isn't something I normally dive into because I often find them to be dryer than fiction but this was pretty fascinating! It's a pretty short read and very concisely and clearly written--Douglass is nice and direct with his descriptions and writing. I was sucked right in and had a hard time putting this down. Definitely harrowing but a very worthwhile read.

It feels weird to give a review to something like this but I had to put my thoughts somewhere after reading it…
I expected this book to be devastating, sad, gory. All the negative adjectives that go along with slavery. I did NOT expect it to resonate so strongly with very similar types of themes and issues we are dealing with today!!! I won’t get into politics on here but let me say, his take on religion and those who claim to be religious felt like I could have written about it today.
It’s both eye-opening and depressing. While it shines a light on how deep the racial tension is in our country, it does make me feel hopeless in some ways.
Alas, this was an important read and I can’t believe I didn’t do it until I was 35. This should be required reading at some point in everyone’s educational career.

This was a perfect follow up to The Impending Crisis. That book deals entirely with the political situation regarding sectional conflict in America arising from the slavery issue. This narrative then firmly reframes that issue into human terms.
