I'm re-reading a bunch of old favourites. I've read this one a LOT of times, but it's been a while since the last reading. It's still brilliant. Just the right amount of battiness for me. You need to have an awareness of the story behind Coleridge's Kubla Khan (and perhaps The Rime of the Ancient Mariner) for the conclusion to make sense.

Trivia: Apparently it was this book that brought about the friendship between Adams and Dawkins.

So, onto The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul. *oh joy*

I lost my copy and forgot half of what I read already. Will pick it up again when I buy a new one

Four and a half stars
I really loved the first two hundred and something pages of this. I was pulled from my reading slump, I was laughing out loud and trying to frantically explain the absurd plot to my brother. It was the best. It was on par with hitchhikers, it was brilliant and it made me want to actually read the anology of Samuel Taylor Coleridge poems I own (which, I mean, I want to read anything, it was just reading slump you know and impending exams of doom).
Honestly this is the kind of outrageous book you can't explain without looking like a proper nutcase.
However the ending let it down a little bit. I mean you shouldn't have to go look up some weird trivia for it to make sense... Yet that is very Douglas Adams. Anyway I know Adams is a very specific flavour and I get why people don't like him, but to me they are exactly what reading should be, escapism that leaves you trying to explain the interconnectedness of the universe to your boyfriend at ten o'clock at night via text.
I would recommend this to doctor who and Douglas Adams fans and anyone who is willing to simply read and believe without question.

Reminded me of why I love Adams' writing. He doesn't write humor books, he writes fun, engaging stories that are very funny and very hard to put down.

If you like DA you'll like this book but I'm finding him quite stale. If you've read one of his books you've read them all. It makes me lose interest when nothing matters and you're just on a weird whiplash rollercoaster of strange answers.
