I love love loved this one, it was my favourite bsd light novel so far (maybe the fact that it's the only one I knew completely nothing about before reading might be a factor but...)
The "lone stoic man unintentionally adopts a kid" type of stories never fail to tug at my heartstrings. I totally weeped at the end and my love for Fukuzawa and Ranpo grew by a thousand times :')

As someone who has watched the anime up to Season 5, I was pleasantly surprised to find myself still enjoying Chapter 2, despite it being covered in the early part of Season 3 of the anime. The majority of the story is the same, but it was still an engaging read. I will break down my review chapter by chapter, as I have a lot of positive things to say about this book.

Chapter 1: I absolutely loved this chapter. It is a spin-off from anime S1E2, focusing on the preparation for Atsushi’s exam. The dynamic within the ADA (Armed Detective Agency) team is always a highlight for me, with each member’s unique personality and relationships making the story both exciting and humorous. There were several funny moments, especially involving Kunikida, Dazai, and Tanizaki, as the main focus was on them. I even rewatched the anime imagining how they prepared for the exam lol. I hope this chapter gets adapted into an anime, even if it’s just an OVA, because it’s genuinely hilarious.

Chapter 2: As a heads-up, Ranpo is my favorite character, so my opinion may be a bit biased here. The story of how the ADA was formed is one of my favorites. What sets it apart from Anime S3 E1-3 is the more touching portrayal of the relationship between Fukuzawa and Ranpo in the Light Novel (LN). Although written in third-person, we get a lot of insight into Fukuzawa's thoughts and feelings with each action he takes. His care for Ranpo, his willingness to go against his principles to save him, and even his decision to collaborate with others to form the organization are all more clearly depicted in the LN.

Moreover, the relationship between Ranpo and Fukuzawa is more heartfelt in the LN. Their interactions, small gestures, and conversations enrich their bond, making it feel like a father-son relationship. Some of these small moments are missing in the anime, making the LN version more emotionally impactful. We also gain a better understanding of how Fukuzawa’s influence has shaped Ranpo’s character, highlighting why their relationship is so special compared to other members.

For fans of Ranpo and Fukuzawa, this chapter provides an excellent depiction of their character development, shaping who they are in the current timeline. I highly recommend reading the novel, as it is far from boring. This is why I give this book a solid 5/5.
