I think if you like coming of age stories, and want a glimpse into the life of a girl in Antigua, this is a good story to pick up!

The prose is beautiful. Annie is a character who will stay with you.

This wasn’t a bad book by any means,  but it’s just not my cup of tea. I’m not a fan of the narrative style Jamaica Kincaid used. The page long paragraphs and lack of dialogues made the reading experience more tedious. There was no plot, the whole book is just Annie John giving us a chronological account of her childhood. While I appreciated the themes of the book, I find Annie to be really annoying. I don’t have anything against unlikable characters but Annie just comes off as spoiled and narcissistic to the point where I wasn’t invested in her story. I think there are better feminist postcolonial bildungsroman out there.
