4.5 ⭐️ After reading All the Colors of the Dark, I was eager to read more Chris Whitaker. I see how this novel was a clear warm up for ATCOTD - it is also a mystery but with a rich family drama at its core, haunting and heartbreaking and hopeful all at once. Duchess is a young girl who has to care for her little brother and her mother, who is an addict and struggling to get by. When Duchess takes justice into her own hands she starts off a chain reaction that unwinds the lives of many around her.

This was definitely an interesting read. I didn’t enjoy the first half as much as I expected, but also noticed that I was still engaged regardless. The second half was much better for me and while I never felt much of a connection to the characters, it was still a very good story.

Slow burn but SO worth it; his writing style was hard to get used to at first; family tragedy story, brother sister bond; loved the character Duchess Day Radley - self proclaimed "outlaw", tear-jerker
