It’s very strange to judge this own it’s own, separate from the rest of the series. It’s certainly my least favorite volume so far, but it’s doing a lot of heavy lifting in regards to the past/backstory of the main characters. I think the pacing worked better as a web serial, because often the transitions across tiem and space didn’t work for me. At the scene/moment, level, the book is quite good, but as a story it doesn’t quite hold together. The characters are still great, but it feels like they spend the volume spinning their wheels. Overall it’s a solid entry in a good series - if this is the worst part of the series, I’d be impressed overall.

I truly do not remember the Sunshot Campaign at all from The Untamed so this all felt new and exciting to me. Also so much of this book is so emotional and I truly appreciated the fact the flashbacks are cut through with present day scenes that are so much more lighthearted and funny.

I still cannot figure out why Jaing Yanli likes Jin Zixuan let alone loves him, but I liked all the drama their relationship brings about so I can't complain. Also a big fan of the fact that Wei Wuxian is coming to the conclusion that maybe, perhaps, he might not be having gay thoughts for The Bit and he might just be gay.
