This forcefully pulled me out of an oncoming reading slump. I literally had to rip myself away from the pages.
The story was really good, and the characters were great (I LOVE the friendship between Yelena, Janco and Ari). Yet there is something stopping me from giving this five stars I can't quite put my finger on. Perhaps a bit in the way the romance developed? I love them together as a team but I felt it went from zero to hundred in a blink, and I'm a sucker for a slow burn. Still would like to continue on with the series, just not sure if I'll do it right away.

It was just very...transparent. I knew everything that would happen before it happened. And I'm not sure I like Yelena? I think maybe it's just me, but I don't like the 'strong warrior woman' thing. Or maybe it's just that everything just came too easily to her. I don't know. I did love Valek but he didn't get enough time, or we just never really got to look into his mind it seemed. I dunno. Maybe the writing just isn't for me. I have the second book, as I found it cheap second hand and thought I'd like this one but I'm not going to bother. It's just not that interesting a world or characters or writing. It was also darker and grittier than I like.

This was a pretty good book, it kept my attention, even being YA.

If you enjoy this genre, read The Wheel of Time. Best books ever written, and they also include some powerful female characters.

After starting Storm Glass and reading all these references to the Study series I knew I had to go back and read them so I could continue with the Glass series. I'm glad I did.

I originally put off buying these books because they were everywhere. The blurb didn't really rein me in but once I did start reading this book I was hooked. I couldn't wait to find out who would do what. I didn't see the final little twist going on and was completely floored.

I need the second one. Need.

I love Valek. I want my own Valek. He's rather dreamy and tormented.

EXTREMELY 90s romance/fantasy/mystery, some weird gender stuff, protagonist Not Like Other Girls and Somehow Compellingly Beautiful Despite Unwashed/Poor, none of the worldbuilding/politics makes ANY sense if you think about it for more than 0.5 seconds, obviously whipped through it in a weekend
