Well, it got far darker than I was prepared for, and since I was listening to the audio I couldn't skip past any of that.  However, I love most of the characters and the many forms of courage and compassion they display.  I love the little bits of sweetness and humor mixed in.  And I absolutely love the ending. My older students will like this one.

This is a fun story about a world where you may be Graced or have a special ability. I am not sure why but I think I may give this to a fan of Samuri stories. I think it is the thought put into battle that makes me want to do this. Lots of action and yes a little romance for the reader like me who enjoys it. Grades 7+

First, this cover art is STUNNING. Second, er I dunno. I thought the conceit of this world was really interesting, but like most of the book I felt like it skimmed across the surface of things that could have been better explored. It read at a very young-adult level, which is ok, but a little surface-y for my tastes. I found myself over and over wanting a meatier delving into the character and what was happening in the world (which were some interesting characters and plotting.)

This was my first summer homework reading assignment book in middle school. I recently gave it a reread and its just as good as I remembered. The fantasy world is fascinating and intriguing. I enjoyed the main characters and their chemistry was entertaining to see develop.
