Read for high school Creative Writing and college Aesthetics of Theatre I.
Haven't read this from high school and was surprised how much it resonated. Can't wait to hear what the 9th graders think.
I read this play for a college class and really enjoyed it. I'm not someone that enjoys reading plays all that much, but this was in the same vein as a favorite short story of mine - "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl. This is the first piece of Glaspell's that I've read and I liked it so much that I did my final essay on it. I love that there are so many details that can be analyzed in such a small piece of text.
i had to read this for my english class, but it was incredible. i loved it

A little one act play that packs a powerful punch. Glaspell's work is described as "in harmony with contemporary feminist concerns of identity, the difficulty of female expression in patriarchal culture, the disillusionment of marriage of gifted women, and the necessity for female support and understanding" (Schilb and Clifford). Freedom, confinement, guilt, and injustice are quickly explored in this 1916 play. Great way to discuss the use of inference!
