"Well, women are used to worrying over trifles."
** read for gender studies course **
Trifles is a one-act play about the investigation after the murder of a man. The main suspect is his wife, who was with him at the time of death. Therefore, a commitee is sent to the couple's house to investigate.
Although the play is really short, I found it really interesting and entertaining. The irony of the all male commitee's unability to realise what's happened and find anythting against the woman, while Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale realise that Mrs. Wrights did infact commit the murder was genius. It is so clear how the men think the women can only talk about 'trifles', while in fact they are the ones to solve the murder. I also really enjoyed the metaphor of the bird in the cage to describe how Mrs. Wright felt in her own matrimony, and how its death gave her the strenght to did what she had to to escape her terrible reality.
Overall, it was a really solid and enjoyable read, and I can see why it's considered a must for classic feminist literature studies.

Ein humoristischer Seitenhieb auf die klassischen Geschlechterrollen.
The subtlety of Glaspell's writing is something that I greatly appreciate.
funny
I found this play to be very enjoyable for its subtlety and irony. I liked how while the men who were the leads on the case ridiculed the women, the women were actually the ones getting shit done. I always like stories where female characters get their revenge so this was undoubtedly a fun read for me. And I thought of a quote from Lady Gaga while reading this “I don’t believe in the glorifcation of murder, I do believe in the empowerment of women”.
This was an okay play to me and gets a solid 3 star read from me.
I enjoyed the second half of the play more than I did with the first half. The first half was in the men’s perspective which to be honest was kinda boring and some of their comments on women irked me.
On the other hand, when I went to the second half of the play, I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. We follow two women’s perspective as they try to solve a murder and it was very fascinating and feminist!!!!!! The way they were able to solve the case because of the most “trifle” of things shows that big and small objects has an importance to the case and these two women are shown as better detectives than the men.
All in all, I recommend you give this play a go because it’s mystery is very interesting.
