Original Read 4 ★

This was a reread for me and honestly it didn't hold up as I imagine.
I found that I started disliking Hunt and Bryce's relationship in this book. For the most part I felt like it didn't work or was forced, which was a surprised to me as I liked it when I originally read this book.

With the exception of the relationship and Hunt annoying me for parts of the book, I really liked the story that was written. Whilst this is meant to be a romance book as well i found that I much preferred the moments without. The mystery didn't hit as hard this time around as I knew what was happening but it still held up and was what kept me going. The side characters are also strong in this series and I'm happy that we get more POVs in Sky and Breath.

I do find it interesting how much an opinion can change between rereads. I remember very much enjoying this book but it was just a different experience the next time around.

4.25 stars because it took about 200 pages for stuff to kick off but once it did oh boy! I probably spent a lot of time with this book needing to pause and theorise myself. Despite how long it took me to get through it didn’t disappoint. I think I cried about 3 times reading it.

the writing style is super wordy. sometimes entire paragraphs are just one big run on sentence which was messing with me. and the constant male-female dichotomy language is annoying to me.
the first 10-20 pages is so packed with character intros and world building that it was very overwhelming but once i got through that it did get interesting. i like the overall story. i like the main characters sometimes but i have my issues with them too.
a couple of the big twists were predictable to me, predicted about 100 pages prior to but they were still good.
i’m not personally into the “love conquers all” and “everything happens for a reason” mentalities that come up quite a few times either.  Regardless of my personal issues with it though, it was still a pretty entertaining book.

This book is phenomenal and exceeded all of my expectations!  I understand the hype around Sarah J Maas now.  The world of the book is interesting and feels like no other book I've read.  The characters are amazing.  This book is dark, but also so funny at times.  The main character, Bryce, might be my favorite book character ever.  The last 200 or so pages had me in such a grip that I crammed the 800 page book into my carry on for a flight because I could NOT put it down!  Amazing book.  Cannot recommend it enough.

What a whirlwind! Not sure why i’m always skeptical if i’ll like another SJM series because i get so attached to the last one. Surprised yet not surprised that I liked this start equally as much as ACOTAR and TOG (and side note: I’m glad I read it in the recommended order of the former then the latter then this). First 100 pages are confusing but trust me the juice is worth the squeeze. Modern romantasy murder mystery that kept me guessing. Emotional whiplash in the last two parts of the book. Crying in the last 100 pages should be expected at this point. Great setup for the next one.
