I don't think I'm smart enough to fully understand all that Camus wanted me to here. Still, the latter half especially had some interesting ideas and arguments. Glad I read

Phenomenal work that acts well as a manifestation of over two melenias of western philosophy

Myth of Sisyphus is an extremely insightful philosophical book about the absurdity and life. It also compares and explains the works of different major philosophers and then Camus criticizes them. It was the hardest book I have ever read, especially the first half, but it was so worth it. a powerful and unsettling work that dares to ask the most serious question in philosophy: If life has no meaning, is it still worth living?
Camus says that Reason of living itself is reason of death, which he explained very beautifully. He criticized religion and god and the search for an inherent meaning in life extremely harshly, so watch out lol. He called the following religion slavery. We all will face absurdity at the end, so he suggests to embrace it and live with awareness of it with passion and find meaning in the struggle of living, living life itself like Sisyphus. people escape the absurd by following religion, hope or suicide.
absurd is not equal to death. People do suicide because they can not accept the absurd, and life seems meaningless. they think the next logical way is death. They feel despair, and nothing matters, leading to hopelessness. They take absurdity as a defeat, and Camus calls this Logical Suicide, which means if life has no meaning, it's not worth living. He suggests living against it, in struggle, passion, and rebellion like a hero. Accepting the absurd makes life worth living despite meaninglessness.
Life is absurd, but don't commit suicide. embrace absurdity and accept it after finding it. learn to live against it in life, find meaning and passion in struggle. Don't fall into illusions and reject false hope like religion, god, and idealism. live with passion without the appeal of a higher meaning.
The central metaphor of the essay, Sisyphus, condemned to push a rock up a hill forever, is transformed by Camus into a symbol of human freedom. Though the task is meaningless, Sisyphus becomes heroic because he is conscious of his fate and accepts it. “One must imagine Sisyphus happy,” Camus writes, offering one of modern philosophy’s most haunting and liberating conclusions: that we can rebel against the absurd by continuing to live, to choose, to act even without hope.
Camus also critiques other philosophers very badly lol, like Kierkegaard, Nietzschean, Jaspers and even Fyodor, who he believes retreat into religion or metaphysics to escape the absurd. His insistence on living without appeal to a higher meaning is bold and original. He doesn’t offer comfort, he offers freedom, a raw kind that comes from understanding the truth and still choosing to live passionately. He slams them by calling them not true to their philosophy and absurd itself, their philosophy, teaching and action all are different and not true to themselves. Instead of facing the absurd they cheated and accepted a easy way of religion and god to comfort them with ease. They fall into hope and call this action Philosophical Suicide
This book is not always easy reading, especially for those unfamiliar with philosophy, but its ideas are deeply human and surprisingly practical. It encourages us to live fully, honestly, and without resignation, even in a world that doesn’t offer clear answers. Even tho Sisyphus story is only last 2 pages lol which was kinda disappointing ngl but this was book hit like a fucking roller coaster

Re read 3/2/25 for the tattoo :) I think I understood it a bit better this time, though I disagree with the statement that suicide is a logical act taken by the individual. But, I still love the absurdist premise
