I really enjoyed this book, especially the two main characters. Nina Strident is almost killed in a car accident, saved by the otherworldly Yalen, who goes against the rules of his world and fate to rescue her. Stephanie Ingram had me hooked on Yalen at the start. He's mysterious, heroic and honorable. It took me a bit longer to warm up to Nina (especially when she allows her father to try to push her into a romance with a childhood friend) but I suspect that was intended. I got to see Nina grow as an individual. She did the right thing, made the right choices (sometimes with consequences)and developed as a strong character through each obstacle placed in her path - - and this is not a girl with simple hurdles to overcome!
Initially, I thought I was going to be reading a book about a star-crossed love affair, but there is much more than romantic-longing to The Between World. It's a multi-layered tale, ripe with mystery, including several twists and turns that caught me by surprise. The plot elements take off by the middle of the book and build upon each other with break-neck speed. I remember being frustrated when I had to call it a night and stop reading because I wanted to see what happened next!
I loved the author's prose, particularly when describing the feelings Nina and Yalen have for each other, all beautifully told. I certainly hope there is a planned sequel for this novel because I am eager for the story of Yalen and Nina to continue.
