this was so good! i watched the new little mermaid movie and had to find a book to keep the mermaid vibes alive!
and boy does this book do that! i wish we spent more time in the sea! but besides that i really love Simi! i love what the author did with her character! the mythologies and ATR make this book so magical!
i am a little upset at the ending though! like my babies! but i believe the author is basing this book off the original so i guess it stays true to that!

Damn, rating this book is hard! I was very excited about this book. I already had it on my wishlist before I discovered that it was Book Box Club's next pick. I quite enjoy exploring new parts of the world and new mythologies. I also quite love the story of the little mermaid. This book therefore sounded like the perfect combination. So, when we finally started our buddy read, I dove into the story and sprinted a little ahead.
The beginning of the book was amazing. It was atmospheric, it was emotional, it was raw, it was exciting. I almost couldn't stop reading and didn't want to put the book down. I had to know what was going to happen next. But somehow, I kinda lost interest a little over time and it's hard to explain why, because apart from the road trip (a trope I rarely like, actually) there were countless of elements in the story I enjoyed.
I quite liked the Gods, the mythology and the African mythological creatures. I especially like to see how even though the internet didn't exist at the time, different parts of the world created Gods and creatures so much alike, although slightly different. The trickster God Esu reminded me a little of Loki. And the shapeshifters we meet in this story have a lot in common with the werewolves I'm so familiar with.
But somehow I had some issues connecting with the characters and the plot and I can't really explain why. I assume that implies it's a me problem and not a book problem. For some reason I had the feeling that our heroine never really allowed us to look into her heart. I assume that's partly because she lost so much of herself and is struggling herself with who she is, but still. The same issue I had with Kato.
I'm not entirely sure if I will grab the second book in this series. But who knows, maybe my curiosity to find out how it continues develops over time. There's some time after all until the next book release.
