This book was a lesson in perseverance, lemme tell yah.

Like, why did the plot only pick up around 50% of the way in?!?! 😩

I have LOVED everything I’ve read by Adrienne Young… until now. It just didn’t leave me fully satisfied with the plot or the storytelling. She’s an incredible writer, and that came through. But like… James was such a blegh person with very little personality. And the plot was dulllllllll.

Thankfully we got the double whammy reveal, which was very interesting. But why did no one know Autumn was missing until then?!?! Like, her mom?! Friends?! School?! That was a bit odd.

Also the takeaway from this is that if you’re gonna be murdered under odd circumstances… you better have a twin you’re a bit magically connected to who will solve it for yah.

I loved The Unmaking of June Farrow by this same author but didn’t always know what was going on. This book, I knew exactly what was going on but didn’t always enjoy it. I think that I was hoping for or expecting more in the way of magic, but it never really came. As always, though, the author excels at beautiful and atmospheric prose.

This is a really hard book for me to review because Adrienne Young's prose is just so gorgeous. I loved reading this book and the words she put down. The story, although physically short (273 pages), felt very long and drawn out for no reason. Maybe I was just in the mood for it, so it didn't grip me like I wanted to. However, I still will continue to read her work. The macial realism and her real-life experience of being a twin wove so beautifully together. I want more background from James and Micah! I think I needed higher stakes or more flashbacks of their love. I feel like we didn't get to live in it. I think that is the problem with Young's work, is that it is short slice of life stories that feel lived it but I am somehow missing something. 3.5/5 Stars
