Actually not as good, I thought, as his earlier books on nutrition ("Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat" but still deserves five stars. Gary Taubes is required reading if you want to really understand the state of nutrition 'science' today and acquire a thorough understanding of what you can personally do to improve your health long-term.

Fascinating history of sugar and diabetes. Western life kills. Sugar and processed food kill. I think the most definitive research is comparing indigenous populations to western and then it clicks.

Hopefully I will change my eating habits now! Or at least think a bit harder about my choices. ;)

The history chapters were interesting, the best part of the book. The arguments about sugar causing a long list of diseases became increasingly far-fetched and the ending call to action was weak. The second half also became extremely repetitive and felt like every sentence was designed to be a pull quote instead of part of a comprehensive argument. I was left feeling that nothing in nutrition research can ever be conclusive and that this author’s pet theory may or may not be true, but we can never know.

I am Mexican so I have quite a bit of native american blood, and my mother also had gestational diabetes when she was pregnant with me. I have never quite understood a lot of things about diet, and trends and fads affected that. As well as lobbyists and companies not wanting you to be healthy but to continue consuming their products. This book was interesting and helped connect a lot of dots for me. I will definitely reduce more sugar consumption for me and my young family in hopes of staying away from diseases that Westernization brings...
