I don't know why I liked this book so much. The story was kinda dorky, the characters were so-so and it was an easy read. I think because I didn't have to think to read it, or figure anything out, it was enjoyable. Can't wait to read another one of hers!

Notaro is able to crossover from writing humorous nonfiction essays to a humorous novel, but there are definitely some plot holes in this story. To avoid a spoiler, let me just say that the ending drove me nuts. Other than a few obvious shortcomings, this novel was a really fun read. Notaro does a good job at bringing the reader along for the ride to a quirky town in the Pacific Northwest. Many of the characters are endearing and the story takes a few fun twists. This book is good for an entertaining and funny read.

Overdone. The author tries too hard to be funny and it's just dumb. Also, she makes up a town, but then places it squarely in Washington. If you're going to make up a town, don't be so specific unless you've done your research and can describe it correctly. There's no where in this great state that gets as muggy in August as she describes or where the leaves turn all colors. Stick to what you know, Ms. Notaro.

The story is one of a young(ish) woman who moves from a place where she has lived her whole life and is surrounded by friends to a new town. The place she grows up is Phoenix and is described as a dangerous and hard place to live. Her new town in the Pacific Northwest is almost utopian but she can't seem to fit in and find any friends. The real issue for me is that it is supposed to be a comic novel and I didn't even chuckle once. All the characters are so over the top that it felt very YA in the worst sense. What really bothered me is that the moral center of the book was a sort of anti-bullying stance. However, the narrator is the most superficial and judgmental character of them all. I couldn't route for her at all because she was so petty and mean spirited. I mean, it was NO mystery to me why she didn't have any luck finding friends. And she got her happy ending anyway. Blech.
But it only took a day to read and was very much a beach read and had good decriptions

A lot of fun!

Really enjoyed this as a fun read. If you like Fannie Flagg’s books you might like this: light and quick witted.

Ah! I LOVED this book! There is absolutely no other way to express my love and appreciation for this book other than reverting to teenage girl text messaging grammar. OMG! ♥ ♥ ♥
Right, now that that's out of my system, this is the funniest book I have read in a long time. Unfortunately, I was reading it at work and had to control my snickering.
The story is set in this fictional town, Spaulding, Washington. It's little adorable little place that equates in my mind to the Fairhaven neighborhood of Bellingham, but pushed back into the mountains - perhaps by Concrete. The author couldn't have chosen a setting dearer to my heart. (B'ham, not Concrete where the mullet forever lives.)
I won't go into the details of the story, you can read the synopsis for that. Just go out and read it!
