A fun read with a loose mystery. If you like Evanovich you will probably like Notaro. She is known for her self depricating non-fiction books about her life, but her first fiction is equally as entertaining.
While this book was entertaining, and held my attention at times, the pacing was slow and often bordered on coming across as forced. Notaro's writing style is witty and amusing most of the time, but on other occasions it seemed tired and overdone.
While I had fun with this novel the ending also left me a little more annoyed than I would have hoped/expected. I'd recommend this novel for a quick fun read, but nothing more than that.

If you are looking for a book with a deeply irritating, entitled protagonist trying to make a friend in a town full of over-the-top hippie stereotypes, this book might fit your bill. It's silly and accessible and maybe someone else might find it fun, but I just found it slow and obnoxious. The first half of the book is mostly about protagonist Maye Roberts trying and failing to make friends in her new town because everyone she meets is at least a little weird, and she's pretty judgmental. Finally things get moving when she decides to join the local Sewer Pipe Queen pageant, but Maye doesn't really have a character arc, the attempts at humor fell flat, and there were no real plot twists to hold my interest.
The beginning of this book seemed to be pretty heavy on simile. Some of them were funny, but it was starting to get tiresome and i'm glad the second half of the book used it less. The story was funny, the ending was alright.
This was a pretty funny book that was an impulse purchase about 5 months ago while standing in line at Borders. I picked it up off the shelf and read the first 110 pages in one sitting, laughing my ass off and then realizing that it was almost midnight on a Sunday night and time to get to bed. I'd recommend this book to anybody who has ever had to try and make new friends in a new town and was willing to go to any lengths to do it.
It was interesting in that she clearly took inspiration for the town from Eugene, although the events are fictional and so are the people. Quick and easy read!
I gave up on this one. I really like Laurie Notaro, but don't think I like her in the novel format. I think she's a short doses kind of author. :)
