I WISHHHH Layla would’ve killed that man. Elise’s dad is a TERRIBLE creature. Also, FORTY TWO CHAPTERS until they kiss. Really making me wait for it omg. Can’t wait for book 2 tho

This book was one of my first moves into the vampire genre that I enjoyed. The tension to trust evolution of Layla and Elise's relationship and the story that revolved around them was engaging. The story was complex and yet riveting.

Black vampires in 1920's Harlem? A sapphic romance subplot? Yes please! I loved this take on a vampire story. Plenty of tension, mystery and suspense. Looking forward to the next book in the series. Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks Fire for this arc. All opinions are my own.

I enjoyed this book overall, but I was often confused. Sometimes it felt like emotional moments came out of no where, although it could very well be because I was listening to the audiobook instead of reading a physical copy.

I was able to read this ebook through NetGalley!

There's a lot going on in this book- systemic racism, vampires, love.. it's just way too much. And it was still slow!

The world building was not detailed enough. The investigation was boring, and the girls' pasts with each other was built up with only a little pay off. Setting a fantasy romance during in 1920's Harlem is just too big of a task to take on.

Kinda hated the time period due to the racism and it did play a part in the book but how Hayley integrated with the plot was lovely and worth the read in my own opinion. Wasn't any spicy scenes, it gave YA.
