I originally dnf’d this back in the fall but decided to try again, switching to Audible. I’m glad I did - the narration brought the story more to life for me! I felt the pacing was off in spots and enjoyed the second half of the book better due to the amount of action and tension between the characters. I wish there was more progression in the two FMCs relationship (we need better sapphic love!) and I’m not sure I enjoyed the ending which left them back at odds, but I see that there is a sequel in the works so I’m hoping things resolve positively!

Just struggled to get into the story.

I received an ARC copy of this book through a Goodreads giveaway. It was okay. There were a few characters that were somewhat compelling but overall it was just a so-so read for me. However, others may really like it!

Also I'm laughing at the cover everytime I see. It's very..... vaginal. Which is cool.

As a black lesbian I really wanted to like this book. However, for all the hype that it got, I thought that it was rather rushed in some instances. Unfortunately, the plot and the climax is given away in the summary, something I am noticing of a lot of newer books. It's unfortunate because it takes away the suspense. I will say despite that, there are some tense moments between Layla and Elise. There were some characters I felt that didn't need to be there and were created simply to introduce a plot point. This is the author's first book so I won't be too harsh, especially because there are few sapphic (said because I am unsure if one of them are lesbian or bisexual as neither was outright stated) black novels that include a dark skinned love interest. I really loved the Jazz Age setting as this is something that I feel more people can explore in black fiction.
