This didn’t really maintain my attention. Then again historical fiction isn’t my bag for that exact reason.

So glad I read most of this book through audio or else I wouldn’t have been able to finish. The plot was honestly confusing and unclear at many points. The stake of the villainy and plot kept shifting so much I couldn’t understand the characters motives at all. Everyone comparing this to the First Kill show are too right bc the pacing of that show was also ass.

This book was so disappointing. The characters were not only one dimensional, but also highly inconsistent. 90% of the book was build up for the most unsatisfying resolution possible. Not to mention I still don’t understand how people in this world become reapers (aka vampires)
There was so much potential.

going into this book, my hopes were high. unfortunately, my hopes were crushed once i delved into the book. now, hold on! hear me out! haley dennings is a phenomenal writer. i found myself giggling and twirling my fingers as i was reading. my favorite aspect of the book is how hayley navigated the forced proximity between elise and layla. that was executed very well! in terms of plot and character development, this is where the book lost me. halfway through the book, i found myself bored. nothing was happening in the plot that shocked me or moved me. at times, it felt as if the story was being rushed. there are a lot of gaps that i'm still confused about. towards the end of the book, a few plot twists arised but none of the twists shocked me. they felt forced. i will be tuned into the next book to see how the relationship between elise and layla develops. this is a solid 3/5 stars.

i wanted to love this book so bad — the premise sounded right up my alley and i’ve been following hayley for a long time. however, i struggled with it more than i anticipated. the pacing, the plot beats (and the number of them), and the character development all just felt a bit off kilter for me. i think these things can be developed more in the second book, which i do think i will read. i want to see this author’s growth from her debut to her second book.
