For me this book is a new adult, queer friendly, paranormal fantasy romance with a PG-13 rating in terms of level of spice. Thanks to the publisher for letting me read this early.

I quite enjoyed reading this book. I literally flew through the first 40% in about a day however, the latter half of the book began to get a little confusing. There were many instances of time jumps made keeping track of the timeline of events a little difficult. I somewhat enjoyed the two main female characters. There villains that presented themselves throughout the book were super one dimensional. The side characters were entertaining. The plot was able to weave in mentioning realistic events that happened in the area and around America during the 1920s.

Sometimes the steamy situations that happened in this book, which is why I’m calling it a new adult over a young adult book could be distracting to the overarching plot. The characters are 18.

I do enjoy the fact that this was written in third person point of view. It was very refreshing because sometimes the plot got wild and I was just as confused as the characters were and it just worked for me. I do think the book could use a little sprucing because the book didn’t need to be over 400 pages.

This was disappointingly mid. I wanted to love this book, but the writing was repetitive, and the father character was so awful and unhinged that he got in the way of enjoying the plot. The story itself just felt a little disjointed? I don’t know how else to describe it. There were good moments, but overall this was not one I was looking forward to finishing.

The audiobook had multiple errors and I didn’t care for the different accents and voices the narrator used. I’m going to try and read the print version.

It's not the book, it's me. I can't even get deep enough into the plot to give the book a fair shot.

I was hesitant to pick up this book in the first place. Jazz-era stories don't often interest me that much, but I can't put a finger on an exact reason why. Maybe it's due to the hedonistic and decadent undertones of consumption they idealize. Or maybe it's because I prefer more contemporary topics and worlds to read about. Or something else.

I thought adding vampires to the jazzy mix might be interesting, but this book just isn't for me. I struggled to get through even the first chapter. 😅 As it was such an ordeal for me for no clear reason, I'll just skip this book and move on to something that makes me want to read further.

I can't do it anymore. This book is so bad. It reads like the author wrote tropes and tried to make it form a picture like a jigsaw puzzle. The scene transitions are choppy, there's no description of settings anywhere in sight, the characters are bland and their motivations do not make sense. I've been debating this for weeks now and I'm finally done gaslighting myself into thinking this will get better

While I couldn’t personally connect with the characters on a deeper level, I enjoyed learning about them, who they are, their relationship with the other. I would have loved to learnt more about what their friendship was like before the incident occurred. I look forward to the next instalment to see what comes next for Elise and Layla.
