The first 200 pages or so took me a couple months to read on and off. BUT let me tell you I FLEW through the last half. The ending left me SO frustrated (in a good way) and I applaud the author for the fact that I almost threw my book across the room.

You know it’s a good book when you have to take a breather after it ends. All I can say is that I’ll be scrambling to get the second in the series when it comes out because there is no way it ends this way. Dark, action-packed, some spice, what more can you ask for?

This is a fun fast paced read. There are some holes in the world building I really wish were explained. The characters overall are likable but I think could be fleshed out even further.

YA fantasy isnt for me even when its urban and sapphic it pains me to say
also the random usage of conjunctions and then lack thereof upset me a lot

i wanted to come out of this book obsessed with it and make it my new personality but unfortunately that did not happen. phenomenal writing, i actually think that was my favorite thing about the book. and the relationship between both main characters entertained me. however, the book fell flat for me in a lot of ways.
1. i didn't really feel immersed in the setting. the book took place in 1920s harlem, but i feel like the only reason i knew that was because i was told that. i didn't feel like i was in 1920s harlem, which was disappointing.
2. the pacing felt off to me. like it was moving too fast and rushing to get to the end of the story, but at the same time literally nothing happened throughout the book, nothing that mattered anyway. i wished it was slower and took more time to be descriptive of the setting.
3. the enemies to lovers did not hit for me because it didn't feel like they truly were ever enemies. like it was advertised as they HATEEEEE each other and that's not what i got. the tension was there, i enjoyed that A LOT, but it never gave enemies.
4. the conflict wasn't really impactful, it didn't really move me. it wasn't dark enough for me, like sorry i was told it was dark but it really wasn't that dark.
by no means am i saying this book was bad, it was an decent read, i just think based off the way the book was pitched to me, i went in with extremely high expectations and i was let down. i'm still glad i read it, and i'm going to read the next book, hopefully i like that better. overall, a decent book. i look forward to reading more books by hayley in the future, i really enjoy her writing style.

I think I just wasn't in the mood for this book at the time. Writing might be a little too on the nose. Might wait til the second book is out to attempt this again.
