4.5 stars!!!

I was super excited when I was approved for the ARC of this since it was one of my most anticipated books of the year! And I gotta say, this book did NOT disappoint! I think I'm a true enemies to lovers girl and this book really scratched the itch I had for an incredible fantasy romance. The banter between the love interests had me giggling and kicking my feet, which is everything anyone ever wants from a romance. I loved that the romance was also kind of forbidden, it added high stakes to the characters spending time together. I can't wait to read more in this series, it was so much fun and I always had a hard time putting it down everytime I picked it up to read. The only reason it's lowered 0.5 stars is because I felt like things lagged a little bit in points. I wanted the action and romance to continue faster, so it's definitely more of a me thing than a book thing.

Thank you to Recorded Books for providing me with an audiobook copy to review on NetGalley.

Kinda conflicted since I really wanted to love this one, but I don’t think it justified its length. Characters were not consistent in their motives, and the pacing felt a little off at times. There was enough mystery and intrigue for me to finish the book, but I guess I was hoping for something a little more polished.

i wanted to love this book so bad but just didn’t :( i felt like the characters could change on a dime which made it impossible to connect with anybody, and the ending was rushed and unfulfilling. i love the atmosphere of black lesbians in 1920s harlem, tho

What I Liked
1) The politics between reapers and humans I found quite interesting

What I Disliked
1) The book felt very longwinded that I was reading at such a slow pace and had no desire to pick it up. I think this could have been fixed by editing the book down and then maybe I would have been able to finish it.

2) The violence felt very repetitive to the point where it didn't make an impact, it just happened and we moved on

3) It felt wayyy to similar to These Violent Delights that I couldn't help but compare them and TVD was much better written

4) The setting felt like this story could have taken place anywhere. The author did not take the time to build the setting to make me feel immersed like Chloe Gong does in These Violent Delights which is my favourite part about the book

5) I was not at all invested in the romance (although I do acknowledge that because this is a DNF it could have gotten better)

This was one of my most anticipated books of the year and I'm so disappointed. I liked These Violent Delights but DNF'd the sequel and I think these books share similar issues of having a lot of unnecessary pages that could have easily been edited down. At times it did just feel like I was reading something so, so similar to These Violent Delights that I felt I was reading the same book. I wouldn't recommend this as I've seen most reviews feel the same. I would love to read from this author in future as I loved her booktube and I appreciate her writing a book with OCD rep, I just think this book needed to be more refined before being published.

My friend WROTE THIS!!!! Her mind is the mind of a mastermind and if you want to experience a part of her genius, read this book. Black lesbian main characters, vampires, Harlem Renaissance, mystery, AND love potentially overcoming all… need I say more?

2.5 stars, rounded up because I really ~want~ to like this book. It felt like reading a 1st draft though. The concept is there and it's really good, but some scenes just don't connect well and it feels like there's detail missing in important parts, and too much detail in unimportant parts.

Casual-coded ass girls

Just gonna soft DNF this until I’m in the mood to get through through the rest :)

i cannot wait for the second book. i cannot believe this book left on this ending. i need more. a sapphic love story that was best friends to enemies to lovers? sign me UP. but also, i love me a good mystery solving. this was like if veronica mars was a vampire hunter and logan was a vampire and they had to solve all the crimes together. it's really that good with the mystery and the interactions between the two. it also covers racism and prejudice, which i think is important. everyone should read this book. it's highly addicting and so worth the read.
