I went into this book sooooo excited because “lesbian, vampire x vampire hunter, childhood best friends to enemies to lovers, during the Harlem Renaissance” sounds so good, right???? But the Harlem Renaissance barely plays into the story at all, the main characters felt very 2D (side characters were great though ngl) the two “love interests” don’t kiss until LITERALLY 94% INTO THE BOOK which like slow burn is great and all yes, but then at like, 98% they like, break up??? and the story beats kind of make no sense. The writing is great, but A LOT of editing needed to happen to the storyline for this book to be successful. I hope that the next book will be better thought out BUT ALSO end the YA duopoly industrial complex NOW like, most of these stories would do just fine as one concise book yk?
Graphic: Body horror, Emotional abuse, Blood
1926 Harlem. Vampires. Love and sacrifice.
Elise Saint and Layla Quinn. The tension that lingers in between them is crazyyyyy hot. However could that be all wrong ? Could everything Elise thought about Layla be wrong. This Ravenous Fate, will be the judge of that.
I really do hate the Saints (except Elise) from the time her parents came on page absolutely hated em. Sterling. I really wanted him to die or be turned. Not even part of the family but he is a SPITTING image of Tobias Saint. F*king losers
Layla ouuuuuu Layla that’s my b!tch… I felt for her every step of them way. And the endinggggg…. I can’t wait for the next one.

I don't know why it took me so long to sink my teeth into this (all pun intended) but one it had it's claws in me, I couldn't stop. Layla and Elise, top tier enemies to lovers. There is so much distrust between the two of them that I was on the edge the whole time to see how things would fall. Elise, I wanted to scream about your dad every page but I know why you held onto those rose-colored glasses for so long, I'm glad they're finally off. Layla, my love, you're not a monster, but I cannot wait to see you take on this leadership role more.
A fabulous debut that draws you in and devours you whole. This Ravenous Fate had me on the edge the whole book with gorgeous and vivid details coupled with astounding character development and plot twists that I never saw coming.
Thank you Sourcebooks for my advanced copy!

reading this book made me wish for the first time of my life to be in game of thrones so i could kill someone, have a trial by combat and let myself be killed. this book has been a real disappointment and it makes me feel so bad. so many things were wrongs and i feel like the bad things never stopped.
first off, the things i liked : the plot and layla. the plot was to me really interesting and engaging and it made me finish the book ngl. it wasn’t the perfect plot, it’s a little flawed at some places but still a good one like i wanted to know the truth until the end.
layla is the only character i liked in this book. 92% of the book, she was really good written and she was coherent with the story. her backstory was well written and it was easy to like her and understand her struggles. now in the last chapters i think her character got destroyed for the romance and it pissed me off.like what do you mean she doesn’t hate elise for killing valery valerya??? the reaper who saved her when she lost her family to the saints, the reaper she considered as her mother??????? like they talked for like 5 minutes and bam it’s forgiven! i thought i was stupid and out of character. elise’s betrayal (bc it is her again betraying layla) should have made her realize how elise is not to be trusted but no since apparently they love each other, elise killing valerya is no big deal!
let’s start with all the thing i didn’t like in that book and unfortunately, there’s a lot of things.
first, the story felt out of time. if you told me the story was in 2016 instead of 1926, i would’ve believed it. i’m no expert in english, it’s literally my second language, but i expected the character to have another vocabulary, especially since they african american.
it was also very hard to know who was white and who wasn’t. i thought elise was white for like 5 chapters maybe before i got told she wasn’t. i still don’t know if jaime was white or black, which is insane to me since this book is allegedly in 1926. were in the usa, a very still racist country at that time and all time really, black people struggles are a main point of the book and yet i cannot know easily who’s black and who’s not? that part of the writing was messed up to me.
i hated every single one character except layla and i hate even more elise. it’s my first time reading a book and hating the main character as much as i hated elise. she was the worst. she didn’t grew in that book, she was so out of touch it was painful to read, she was mean and condescending for no reason, never tried to understand reapers and gangers, as she loved to reminded them what they were, and fine, i understand like she’s under the will of her father that she wants to make proud of her but fuck she was horrible! i hated her throughout the entire bookand when for a second i thought she was gonna die i literally could’ve cried of joy . i have so much bad things to say about her it’s literally pains me but i feel like i cant remember everything. she was a fucking bourgeoise incapable to understand other people’s struggles. she refused to see and treat people like jaime like normal person and that was super weird hello?????? she was so easy to hate i did not feel bad for her once in the story.
other « less » important characters, like sterling, elise’s parents, even her sister, were like relevant for the plot but ultimately empty and unnecessary and too easy to hate because they’re USELESS.and really i don’t know what kind of vodoo elise’s father did to sterling in that office but oh my god was it strong. his character changed so quickly and wrongly it was bad , like really bad and i actually wanted to die.
i also did not like how we were forced to feel things about some characters we knew for like 40 pages when even elise didn’t care for.
the romance was bad. really bad. layla was ruined for it, it didn’t make any sense because elise was still the same piece of shit she was at the beginning of the story, and it was not relevant at all because few chapters later, elise still do what she’s the best at and betrays us!
i feel like i’ve said everything but at the same time i think something is missing like i didn’t hate on this book enough. it gave me death’s wish for myself and everyone around me, it took me so long to read because it was like really bad and i’m really sad because the story really seemed nice and interesting. the two stars is me being nice bc it’s like 2am when i’m writing this and it’s gay month so i’m nice bc they’re lesbians elise doesn’t deserve layla, girl please run away from that demon, i will not be reading the second volume and i think i said everything ok bye
