Fun, quick read about London. Reach chapter looks at a different feature under London's streets. The tube and bunker chapters were the best. Overall this is a brief book. Nothing too complicated, but it is fun.

A short and fun miscellany of the world under the streets of London. The book has some structure, looking at springs, rivers which have been built over, manmade tunnels, the Tube network, and underground bunkers, amongst other things, but many of Ackroyd's themes cut across the chapters. Inevitably with a book of this nature, most of the things that stick with you (well, me) are the little factoids - the London Underground has its own species of mosquito! - which end up leaving a slightly scattershot feel. But that is not really the fault of this book. Much to learn and enjoy!

I’m disappointed that this was published at all. It is clearly a low-effort attempt to spin off some of the content Ackroyd produced for his larger book about London — a collection of admittedly interesting facts and anecdotes about the world underneath London, held together by faux-poetic musings that would feel at home in a (bad) college essay.

Informative and interesting. The length of the book means it's more an overview than a deep (hah) dive, but it definitely gave me things to read more thoroughly about.

This is a great little book if you love London or are planning to visit there. The next time I am in London I will pay more attention when I am traveling on the tube.
