There's really no way around this; it's just not a good book. Dams has to make an enormous stretch to get her detectives involved in this case in the first place. Then, she spends so much time describing various basic aspects of Canada and the prime tourism spots of Victoria that it's clear she mostly wanted to write a travel book. Every scene with the First Nations characters or discussion of modern issues facing First Nations people was so unbearably cringey (or outright racist). It's pretty clear that no sensitivity readers were used for this book and they absolutely should have been. And then on top of all that the mystery wasn't very good! The plot was all over the place with side plots that just drop off, and everything was so convenient and easy. Like truly unbelievably easy. So unsatisfying.

An excellent addition to this excellent cozy mystery series.
It's great to meet again the well thought characters and to travel with them to a new country.
The mystery is solid and kept me guessing, the setting is vivid and learned a lot about Canada.
An entertaining and engrossing read, highly recommended.
Many thanks to Severn House and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
