I love the theme of this book - taking pride in who you are even when other people are teasing you. A young Chinese boy moves to America and starts going to school. He doesn’t yet speak English. There is one Chinese girl in the room and the teacher asks her to talk to him, but she is embarrassed to speak Chinese in front of the kids.

The boy does learn to understand and speak some English. He decides that he will share his culture with the class for Chinese New Year. He makes all the decorations and shares them with the class and the class has fun with it and they get into it. The other Chinese girl shares her family traditions and she opens up too and acts less embarrassed about being Chinese too.

I think it’s a nice story and the art is colorful and interesting. Rich uses like Rainbow colors for many of the things so it has this fantasy feel to it. The kids thought this was a decent story. The nephew enjoyed seeing the dragon in the story so he thought it was ok. It should be funnier. He thought if the boy farted, he would make kids laugh and have more friends. He gave it 4 stars. The niece appreciated the boy and what he went through. I think she related just a little with this boy. She gave it 4 stars too.

Happy Year of the Ox! 🐂 In this book, a young boy moves from Hong Kong to Los Angeles and doesn’t know much English. When he is at school, he’s having a hard time adjusting and learning English. When he’s assigned homework to create themed decorations for their classroom during the month of February, he comes up with decoration ideas for Chinese New Year 🧧🧨 His teacher and classmates like his idea and this allows the boy to share his heritage through decorations 😊
