dark mysterious tense
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: Complicated

the case was interesting but it was difficult on audio to keep track of the unfamiliar japanese names so i felt a bit confused at the end. don’t know if this is the genre for me but i’m willing to try another of his mysteries.

So fun! Had a whole other idea about how it was going to end. So retro and nostalgic.

cool twist but the narrator was so distracting and the amount of characters was confusing for me. also misogyny (boo!). enjoyable overall but those parts took me out of the story so i cant rate it higher unfortunately

Seven members of a university Mystery Club are stranded on a remote Japanese island in the summer of 1986, and things quickly take a dark turn as they’re picked off one by one. I wasn’t expecting much, but it ended up being an interesting read, as most locked-room mysteries tend to be. The island setting really cranks up the suspense, and the diagrams helped me picture everything clearly. Plus, I loved the little nods to classic mystery fiction, especially the characters being named after famous crime writers.

That said, the characters could’ve used a bit more depth. They stayed oddly calm even as their friends were being murdered, which made it hard to connect with them. The deaths felt sudden but didn’t hit as hard as I hoped. The final reveal was surprising but not as shocking as I hoped, mainly because the mystery relies on the author hiding key details. While the murderer’s explanation ties things together, it feels a bit unrealistic.
