This book was just okay. The premise was very interesting and the genre this book is built on even more so. But it fell flat with shallow characters a plot that only picked up halfway through the book, which is far too long, and stilted dull dialogue. Perhaps the translation didn't do this book the justice it deserved. Perhaps it was me? Either way I didn't really enjoy this book as much as others did. I'd like to dive deeper into more stories of this genre though.

Dopo molti anni di rifiuto assoluto per i gialli, ho deciso di dare una chance a questo libro perché ho letto essere simile a “Dieci piccoli indiani” di Agatha Christie. Infatti, proprio come quest’ultimo, ha tutte le caratteristiche che secondo me rendono un giallo perfetto (personaggi brillanti che fanno deduzioni brillanti, niente polizia, case isolate da tutto e da tutti, omicidi “annunciati”).
Questo romanzo ha superato di gran lunga le mie aspettative: l’autore riesce a raccontare la storia in maniera magistrale, alternando le “indagini” sulla terraferma e sull’isola, con una tensione sempre crescente fino alla fine.
Quello che ho apprezzato molto è che l’autore non nasconde nessuna informazione al lettore (a parte i veri nomi dei personaggi, ma ha senso) e quindi è possibile intuire effettivamente chi sia l’assassino (a metà libro avevo più o meno capito chi fosse il colpevole e anche perché avesse tagliato la mano alla prima vittima), il che rende tutto estremamente godibile.
Il finale poi mi è piaciuto davvero tanto, con l’assassino che trovando la bottiglia sulla spiaggia ai suoi piedi, decide di confessarsi per i sensi di colpa. Bello anche il fatto che effettivamente l’assassino a metà dell’opera si rende conto di star compiendo una cosa malvagia, tanto da rimanere terrorizzato dal cadavere dell’amica trovato in bagno, anche se sapeva che prima o poi sarebbe morta.
Molte recensioni dicono che i personaggi sono bidimensionali, su questo non sono totalmente d’accordo. Certo, non abbiamo opportunità di conoscerli a tutto tondo, ma hanno delle caratteristiche ben precise e riconoscibili, e ci sono dei momenti più intimi e piccole frasi che si scambiano che ci fanno intendere molto bene sia il loro carattere che il rapporto che c’è tra di loro, senza perdersi in pagine e pagine di racconti di vita vissuta.
Ho piacevolmente scoperto che l’autore ha creato una serie di gialli, tutti incentrati su delitti che avvengono in case “strane”, e spero vivamente che l’Einaudi decida di continuare a tradurre anche questi perché sarei la prima a leggerli tutti.
Davvero una bellissima esperienza di lettura.

First book I’ve ever read in a day. Incredible twist that I didn’t see coming at all! I want to re-read now that I know the twist and see if I can spot the clues.

I enjoyed this homage to 'And Then There Were None' by Agatha Christie. The author does not try to hide the fact that they are celebrating one of the best closed circle mysteries ever written. While I didn't feel the same sense of dread that I felt reading Christie's story, I enjoyed this one very much.
Set on an island (naturally) where the previous inhabitants died in a mysterious fire, the story is told in dual perspectives. We follow the Kyoto University mystery club who have been invited to the island 6 months after the mysterious deaths of the family that lived there, and we also get narrative from a former member of the mystery club who is back on the mainland but who is engaged in the mystery after receiving an invitation to the island signed by the former - dead - owner.
This was fun and I will be reading the next one in this series.
