Samuel Butler

3.2 AVERAGE

I only read Erewhon, which I frankly disliked so much that I didn't bother to read the second volume. Butler tells a story of a fantastical encounter with a new civilization, which happens to be the most boring, vain civilization ever. It's supposed to be a social commentary on religion and such, but I just found it lame.
adventurous tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot

Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

Odd satire on Missionary work and colonialism, the first third is somewhat readable, but really loses it after that. The conclusion really brings home the moral bankruptcy of the unlikeable narrator. There's an odd sequence which predicts the future of humanity as slaves of what is basically AI's, perhaps the first? but if you're looking for late Victorian sci fi, there's a lot better out there.
