This is such a great non-fiction read. I’m not the biggest fan of non fiction, however I had to read this for a class and it was such a unique and inspiring read to see where the students go in life.

I decided not to rate this book because it is fully of testimonies and people's truth, so my opinion about the book is irrelevant. With that said, I did something that I never do and  I read the reviews before I finished the book and I was disappointed. It's very clear to see that unfortunately, Tolerance and acceptance is still a thing that we struggle with in our country. I was specifically disappointed with the reviews of people that said they were educators. At the end of the day, Erin Gruwell was able to get her students engaged in class, excited about the material, and invested in each other's successes (as well as their own in lots of cases); what more is a teacher supposed to do, that is her job and she did it wonderfully.

Being a 24 year old (close in age to Erin when she started) and pursuing education myself at a middle school where many of the students are a part of low-income families and "at-risk" situations, I can see my students struggling with similar things that the Freedom Writers struggle with. Their experiences are universal, but unique at the same time. Their strength and ability to overcome obstacles is inspiring. I hope to one day have students who I am able to connect with like Erin and able to share in both success and struggle in order to grow too.
Everyone, especially anyone who wants to go into education, should read this book and really take the time to take it in. These are still issues in our world.

I don’t remember much since I last read it back in January, so you can tell how memorable it was for me, lol. I dunno, it was alright. The whole “tolerance for ALL” mantra was way too heavy-handed for my taste, but I’m glad the students were able to find solace and community within Gruwell’s classroom.
