As someone who's got tons of love for The Prestige, I'm glad that I was finally able to carve out time for the novel from which the 2006 movie had been adapted. Maybe I'd feel differently if I had read the book first, but I think this is one of those cases where the adaptation is better than the source material. There's definitely some good meat that the author Christopher Priest was able to present in his book when it comes to the intricacies of pursuing the career of a magician, the heated rivalry between Alfred Borden and Rupert Angier, and the ways in which we're willing to sacrifice our very souls in order to strive for artistic perfection. However, the movie takes those elements and polishes them up into a form that's more tightly written and more heartbreaking. I also thought the book could get too slowly paced for my taste.

Overall, I'm officially rating The Prestige 3.25 out of 5 stars, which is getting rounded down to 3 stars here on Goodreads. If you're a fan of the Christopher Nolan film, I recommend taking a crack at the book. If you've never seen the movie before, then I'm urging you to watch it ASAP. I'd say do that before reading the book, although I wonder what it would be like to read the book and then watch the movie.
