Leo Geo and the Cosmic Crisis by Jon Chad

Too busy for my taste, although it might appeal to kids who like Where's Waldo. In fact, there's a list of things to find at the beginning of the book. I went through the whole book, like, 5 times to find "cute cookie thieves," and finally my husband found them (they were raccoons). There weren't separate panels -- all the action unfolds in one double-page spread, which probably contributed to the cluttered, busy feeling. I had a hard time following the dialogue at first, but then realized you have to follow the character on the page to read the dialogue in sequence. Finally, I thought that all the science info was kind of clunky and didactic. It was interesting information, but really slowed the story down.

Did anyone else thing Leo Geo looked like the Human Being from Community? I found that a little unsettling.

Jon Chad is extremely creative with how he designs his books. Pages will alternate between horizontal and vertical and story switches from back to front. Even the text can be a challenge to read. However, for those kids looking for something a bit different and a bit of a challenge - this is a great one to share with them.
