I don't remember ever reading this book which is actually a series of short stories. I think I liked Riki Tiki Tavi the best but maybe that is just because I am most familiar with that one.

Kipling's Jungle Book has been on my TBR pile for years and I'm not sure why I haven't read it until now, especially since I have this odd interest in feral children. I didn't anticipate the jungle language being so Shakespearean with black panthers, bears and rock snakes speaking with thou, thee, thy, thine & ye. But there ye have it. ♡

We've been reading The Jungle Book since September or so, with breaks for a short Thanksgiving read-aloud and Advent/Christmas read-alouds.
We enjoyed this tremendously. Stories of laughter and friendship, love and protection, Law and courtesy. Loyalty. Survival.
This edition has both Jungle Books and we enjoyed them both ... even when a story started slowly and hard to read, it ended well.
I think Jason enjoyed this more than anyone else, and we all enjoyed it. I expect we will revisit it when the children are older.

There are 3 Mowgli chapters, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a chapter about a seal, one about a boy who is learning to be an elephant handler, and one about animals used in battle, with poems between all the chapters. Our favorites were the stories about Mowgli and Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. All of the stories are good, but the last chapter wasn't very interesting for the boys. It is primarily a conversation between animals about how they are each used in battle. Since each chapter is a stand-alone story (apart from the 3 about Mowgli), you could easily pick and choose which ones you want to read.
for the sake of another review with the same words, this also counts for book #2. I love jungle book. it's just so fun to imagine this world, and each character is so engaging. I love seeing Kipling's knowledge through this story.
It was one of the good books for that age though u kind off grow out of it. Mainly because the idea has been recycled too many times in cartoons movies tv shows and animation that that all color has drained out of it. But the jungle book was something nearly everyone read without much complaint. The idea of total absolute freedom. among wild animals to able to talk to them having panthers for friends and wolfs for brothers so many children fantasy. To eat fresh fruit straight off the branches, to steal undetected, to climb trees !!!!!!
Konnte mich leider nicht überzeugen und ob es wirklich was für Kinder ist - hängt wohl sehr vom Alter bzw. Entwicklungsstand ab. Ich habe es mir - vermutlich wg. Disney - ganz anders vorgestellt.
I am pretty sure that I read this book when I was younger. The stories were familiar and I was not surprised that the book did not resemble Disney's Jungle Book. (It is amazing how much power Disney has had to change our memories of certain stories.)
I picked this up again because The Jungle Book is so important in The Tiger's Wife. I wanted to know what Kipling's images were of Shere Khan since this story is the only way that a rogue tiger is recognized in The Tiger's Wife.
I did not really get any more insight into Tea Obreht's novel. I understand why The Jungle Book is so important to the character's in the book - I was mostly wondering if there was some hidden meaning.
It was good to revisit The Jungle Book. Although Kipling was definitely a product of his time and place, his stories are fun to read. In my opinion the book is much more fun than the movie.

Lovely set of children's stories here. But didn't we all know that? And of course, the actual book is better than the Disney movie. The movie has been sanitized for your protection, and we all knew that, too.
I most enjoyed the stories of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and Mowgli.
