ประมาณหนึ่งร้อยหน้าแรกบอกเลยว่าสนุกมาก อาจจะเพราะด้วยความที่เราเป็นคนเอเชียด้วย แต่หลังจากนั้นผมเริ่มรู้สึกว่ามันเหมือนหนังสือประวัติศาสตร์ละ ทุกอย่างแม่งเกิดขึ้นเร็วมาก กองทัพฝ่ายกบฏรวมทัพกันได้ภายในไม่กี่บรรทัด ขุนนางแต่งงานกันภายในหนึ่งบท บทหักหลังภายในไม่กี่หน้า นี่น่าจะเป็นจุดบอดที่สุดของนิยายเล่มนี้ละคือมันไม่ใช่ character-driven narrative ถึงในเรื่องจะมีตัวละครเยอะแยะ แต่ก็มีแค่สองตัวละครหลักที่เขียนมาดีมาก ข้อดีของการทำแบบนี้ในความคิดของผมคือขนาดของเนื้อเรื่องแม่งโคตรใหญ่ ต้องบอกว่าผมเกือบหมดใจกับเรื่องนี้ละ แต่ทุกอย่างมันเปลี่ยนไปพอ conflict ที่สองมันเริ่มขึ้น นี่แหละความประเสริฐของจริงของหนังสือเล่มนี้มันถึงมา ความซับซ้อนของอำนาจและความเป็นผู้นำ ผลกระทบของลัทธิล่าอาณานิคม มันยุติธรรมหรือไม่ที่เราจะตัดสินคนในอดีตจากยุคปัจจุบัน? ผลลัพธ์สร้างความชอบธรรมให้วิธีการหรือไม่? สิ่งเหล่านี้ถูกใส่เข้าไปในเนื้อเรื่องอย่างลงตัว ไม่แปลกเลยที่เรื่องแบบนี้จะชนะรางวัลใหญ่อย่าง Nebula Award และ Hugo Award
p.s. ในเล่มนี้ยังรู้สึกสองจิตสองใจตัวละครผู้หญิงอยู่ เข้าใจว่าคงเป็นบริบทในยุคนั้น แต่ในตอนท้ายของหนังสือดูเหมือนว่ามันกำลังจะไปในแนวทางที่ดีขึ้น อันนี้ผมคงต้องรออ่านใน The Wall of Storms

Reading the history of the Qin at the same time, giving massive spoilers for The Grace of Kings!!
2 stars: it was okay.
I do not know why, but reading this book took a lot of effort. The writing style was good and reads nicely.
It is an epos: by which I mean that it spans a lot of years. The only downside is that, especially the first 200 pages or so, it is not really clear who the main characters are. A lot of names and characters, some only have a few paragraphs, some have larger parts, but they are not main or even side characters. Even though I liked the idea, it makes for confusing reading. (Even with the List of major characters.)
The story is well written, but I didn’t really feel invested in any of the characters. The hurdles didn’t really come across as hurdles, as I felt that the resolution was always nigh.
All in all I am a bit conflicted.
Time will tell if I will continu this series.
