Interesting epic fantasy, but the book was skimpy on character moments due to the large cast and it prevented me from enjoying it as much. I started out liking Kuni Garu but grew to dislike him as the story continued. That, combined with how long are each of the three following books, make me not want to continue the series. Still, I’m glad I read it. I’ll need to read Ken Liu’s short stories soon and see if I like them more.

I think I enjoyed this book overall but it was also kind of a slog.

The characterization, on the whole, feels very flimsy. We don't spend long enough with any of them to get invested and when characters' behavior changes instead of feeling like the result of some growth (or deterioration) or a breakdown or whatever it just feels completely out of nowhere. There were several examples of this, and they were all irritating. There were also several points of potential interest that just never got developed.

There is a significant amount of lore-dumping, which I usually don't mind, but the lack of emotional investment in anything that happened between the stretches of exposition made it an incredibly dry read.

I may still read Wall of Storms only because I've heard it's so different, but Grace of Kings on its own did not make me interested in continuing the series.

3.5, maybe more if you're super into history/historical fiction.

There was always something happening in the book, despite it's long length. Given the limited downtime, a number of characters while likable, felt flat. Characters were sometimes introduced, just to be plucked out of the story later via mishap, divine intervention, etc. The story is ambitious in scope and told through a patchwork-style weaving of many, short events. Overall I found this enjoyable, but think it could have been a bit more focused around specific, complex characters.
