It took me years to finish this book bc the topics are heavy at times and I needed time to process them but it is a really interesting book. So many different people share their thoughts in so many different ways. I am convinced that everyone will find something that resonates with them in this book. Bc it’s so versatile.

It's okay not to by okay (it's not okay to feel blue and other lies)

This is an important book, and I would give it 5 stars for its topic and goals. I wholeheartedly support mental health awareness and commend the book's contributors. That being said, while there are some very well written pieces in here, there are also some not very well written pieces in here. I sped through some entries, while others led me to put the book down for weeks. It is very heavy in terms of content, and very impactful for specific audiences, but I just don't think it was the perfect read for me.

A major mixed bag. The collection as a whole is well worth a read, and this is a book I'd recommend keeping on your bedside table to dip in and out of over several weeks.

I will say: as with most essay collections, some of these pieces just feel like filler. I'm especially not a fan of amateur poetry by celebrities - it's often extremely cringeworthy. There are even some pieces which seem to have been included only because they have a famous name attached to them, as they're pretty self-indulgent and generic (cough, Naomi Campbell).

That said, some of these essays are brilliant and moving, and cover the spectrum of mental health well. I especially like and appreciate Scarlett Curtis's introductions to each section, which are refreshingly raw and honest. Overall it's very readable and ultimately uplifting, and I for one feel a little lighter for having read it.

So happy this book exists. I really needed this two years ago when I was in a pretty dark place, but I'm still happy I read it now. It's never too late to learn, to know you're not alone. That it will be ok. It's ok not to be ok ❤
