The first three books of this series were set in modern times. This prequel is set in 1957 when Queen Elizabeth’s fictional sleuthing ours just beginning and her first secretary/detective partner is recruited.
The murder mystery itself is good - complicated and intriguing.
Because it is effectively the “first” in the series, it takes time to introduce the characters and get the queen and then her assistant involved. It’s slow developing and not really engaging until the late parts of the book
Also because it is set in 1957, it is a historical novel and the author weaves in actually diplomatic situations and visits the Queen has to deal with. There are interesting but tend to disrupt the pacing of the mystery.
I did not enjoy this as much as the previous books but I’m happy I read it and I will check out the next book.
