This series gets better and better.

After two books of smouldering tension and growing feelings the slow burn has finally ignited!

Our shadow daddy Luther continues to be a simp for Diem alone. I love how he tempers his MMC over protectiveness to foster her independence and confidence.

4/5 I can’t wait for book 4

Wow. This book was so long. It probably could have been 2, and I enjoyed reading in the acknowledgments that the author considered that. But it was SO GOOD. Add me to the list of people eagerly awaiting the publication of book 4!

Major spoilers behind the tag:

Diem grew so much, it was lovely and inspiring to watch. Although,  I’m about to pull my hair out over her refusal to kill objectively evil people, and even sometimes heal them. Also, who is watching all the other realms while she is on the run? It seems like she has a lot of options on where to live next but repeatedly assumes she will stay in Lumnos. I look forward to reading where that all ends up.

I was surprised by how this book didn’t feel too long while I read it; there was plenty of action and things happening to love the story forward. The beginning felt a little cyclical though which slowed things down. While I enjoy this complex world and the magic system, I was really frustrated by Diem’s utter lack of character growth throughout this book. Even though she should be a different person that she was in book 1, she hasn’t changed. She is still stuck on the same moral quandary. And while she is biting at the bit to act in revenge against anyone who hurts/has hurt her family, she lacks the fortitude to actually cause harm to those who deserve it. It’s getting a bit old. In order to be a queen, she needs to make sacrifices, and she is unwilling to do so, even when it is necessary for the good of the many or of the kingdom. She was often short-sighted and not very smart, to the point where supposed plot twists were very predictable and heavy handed in the author’s allusions. I was screaming at Diem because she felt blindsided by betrayal and often forgot the “get out of jail free cards” that were available to her. I will say that the growth of the side characters and the introduction of some complex and interesting tertiary characters were really well done and kept me interested. I’m looking forward to the last book but feel it’ll be a long one…

I think this was definitely better than the previous books although this felt a bit long for the story. The plot was really interesting and it felt like it was an adventure for the majority of it. I felt a lot more connected to the characters unlike how it felt with the previous books.

The further I go with this series, the more I agree that it does not get as much hype as it deserves and this third volume is no exception. I was hooked from the very first page and entranced all the way through, right up to its cliffhanger ending. I found myself unable to do anything except read for a full day as I ripped through all 756 pages and loved every second as I cheered, laughed, gasped and even wept.

As the saga continued, the epic scope of the story increased as more of the different realms are revealed and the adventure quotient increased five fold. Political intrigue, characters, their relationships, backstories, magic, romance, action - this book had it all.

Again, even though many consider this to be a romantasy title, I would classify it as a fantasy with a strong romantic subplot. As for the romance, the slow burn 🔥 that began in book one finally started to catch fire here and when it did… let’s just say that Luther is definitely up there in the top ten of shadow daddies with spiciness to spare (at least 🌶️🌶️🌶️).

As with the first two books, the author also manages to weave a political allegory into the tale which make some great points about the political sphere in light of ongoing issues such as BLM, trans rights and #MeToo.  After all, the question in Diem’s world that she struggles with, as we do in our world, is how do you find a path where everyone benefits and you avoid creating even more bloodshed and violence in order to break the cycle?

The only negative thing I have to say about “Heat” is that it ended on a cliffhanger and there is still another year before the next volume is released! 😫😩😢 🤬
Maybe we’ll get lucky and the new book will come out sooner… 🤞🏻

5 stars 🤓📚

So much happened. So much so it definitely felt like it could have been two books but I also get why it wasn't.

I cant wait to have the next book especially with the way this one ended because what the fuck.
