This book has a very interesting concept - a teenage girl who believes that serial killers are born not made. She believes this because she has grown up with an inborn "itch" to kill. She has managed to keep it under control until now. Since she is now feeling the overwhelming need to act on her “Killer Instincts” she has decided to take it in a vigilante direction and channels her hate to those who deserve retribution for their unpunished crimes. So we tag along with Lane as she sits in the local court room - under the premise of being interested in become a lawyer – and this is where she finds her victims – those that are found not guilty of crimes she is sure they actually committed.
Lane is still a teenager and so we also see her trying to be a “regular” girl in high school and interacting with her family. Coincidentally, Lane’s parents are both in the FBI and working on a case involving a serial killer who has been killing one woman every September for the last 14 years. Even more coincidentally, this year the serial killer struck in Lane’s hometown and she is all about tracking down the killer to delve out her own kind of justice.
This book has a lot of unbelievable elements to it that I frequently see in YA books. I don’t want to go off on a rant here, but WHERE ARE THE FREAKING PARENTS of these teenagers?????? Aside from that there are a lot of things that are contrived in order to make the whole story play out.
What I did like is that it is a quick read, there are a lot of red herrings thrown about, and there is a twist at the end that had crossed my mind, but didn’t give it away.

A wild and engaging story that I honestly felt a little wierd reading and enjoying. I heard about this book from someone on book tube and when they referred to it as similar to Criminal Minds, my all time favorite show, I had to read it. It was fast paced and brutal, but fascinating. I'm curious to see what will happen next with Lane and her family in the second book.
Man, I have not been this disappointed with a book in a really long time. I just finished reading Killer Instinct by SE Green and I totally had Nick from New Girl face after closing the book. I know I probably should have DNFed it right after the main character calls her sister a slut, but I couldn’t do that because I was already 50 pages deep and the book is only 250 pages and for real, I just cannot let myself give up so early in the book. Do any of you have that problem, where you can’t quite force yourself to DNF even though you really want to, because the book is short and easy?

This book is weird and disturbing but I loved it. Why not a 5 stars ? Slut shaming and some cringe worthy scenes. I'm very curious to see what book two has to offer.

"I don't know why I am the way I am, why I think the way I think, why I do the things I do. All I know is that I'm different. Always have been. I can't remember a time when I didn't know something was off in me."
Lane was a very distant main character. Hard to like. Hard to relate to. Because she was so monotone in her actions, way of speaking, way of telling the story - I didn't really feel like I was reading a thriller. It felt very textbook and just...this is the action, this is the result, this is what happens next. I wasn't really drawn into the story even though I really liked the concept of it. I do have to admit, that twist at the end? Did not see that one coming.

I have really mixed feelings about this book. On one hand, I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it because I did despite its flaws; but on the other hand, I know that it's not a good book. I mean there were times when I thought to myself "This HAS to be Dexter fanfiction" because there were quite a lot of similarities between this book and the first season of Dexter. Also the slut-shaming of Lane's own sister was super irritating and low. The romance just made me scratch my head, too. I don't know, I liked it but I just wanted to acknowledge that it had some major problems.
If you love those gory, murder-mystery Lifetime movies as much as I do then you REALLY need to read. this. book. now.
A review will hopefully be up on my blog in the coming weeks.

Sure, the book is entertaining. But it definitely lacks in originality, from characterization to clear Dexter rip-offs.

Thanks a lot, Pulseit, for giving the chance to read the book right the day it was released. It was cool.
And the book was... Ouch! But that in a quite good way. I mean... it was an easy read and a nice and twisted and powerful story, though the intimate moments aren't S. E. Green's speciality. I know that Lane was supposed to be emotionless until the Zach thing, but I do not think I need to be remembered each time Lane passes the library, that she has had a 'feeling' there. That lowered its score a lot for me.
Then it came... I know this is supposed to be in the real world. And it was somehow(only) realistic and etcetera, but there's no real need for f-bombs (as the author named them in the book) and sexual terms. I won't continue because I do not want to bore anyone with a preach.
But skipping all over the 'over-limits' that a respected and self-respected book doesn't really need, it was good. I cannot say it kept me at the edge of my seat and my heartbeat gone mad after half of the book.... I can't really say that but it's certain that the writing, the storyline and everything else were made up by someone talented. I gotta thanks S.E. Green for that.
It is kind of weird when all the pieces of the puzzle are connected. It's lacks realism when you have two parents into FBI, your biological father's line is totally fed up with criminals and sadistic people, your best and only friend is a high-tech genius that hacks into FBI database (that's cool, by the way!). It's weird and that's another reason I cannot like it enough.
But the read, the writing, the way the story is told, the easiness I could read it... It rocks at these chapters. Only that it might not be enough. I am optimistic today (though i'm usually the most pesimistic person you are ever going to read reviews from!!) and I might rank it good.
Overall, it was good, though it didn't sparkle at all!
