It was terrible! If I could, I'd give it a negative rating. It made no sense. Why would the assumption be that the decapitator (the fake uncle) was dead when the mother had been decapitated and there was no other body there? Wouldn't the assumption be that he was still out there at large? So many ridiculous plot lines and inconsistent characters. I can't believe I wasted time reading to the end.
This was a book that kept me turning the pages to find out what happened, definitely living up to it's 'thriller' billing. I was rec'ed this because I love Dexter and I think maybe that hindered my enjoyment of the book rather than helped it. You know those YA books you read (as an adult) and throughout the story you can't help but feel that if this were an adult novel the author could/would really 'go for it'. This was one of those books. However, I will say that the author's reticence to 'go for it' did pay off with the ending and I found myself understanding/forgiving the decision not to 'go for it'. I did feel it was a little heavy handed in the intentional 'mis' foreshadowing. In the end, I enjoyed the book but perhaps someone who is a little tentative about straight on murder-thrillers would enjoy it more. There's a sequel and I'm undecided yet whether I'm going to pick it up. It depends on whether my brain lingers on Lane and her life and how she handles things or not.
3,5/5*
HAHAHAHA... Jsem ZKLAMANÁ a přitom děsně nadšená. Mám tolik energie, že jdu vyluxovat celý barák! PŘIŠLA JSEM NA VRAHA! :D Yeees! :D Někdy to děsně prožívám, tahle knížka si prožívání zaslouží! Přečíst, rozhodně! :D
btw.. Čekala jsem trochu větší řež! A ono ani prd. Vlastně jo, pár prdů bylo. Pár.
Screams shatter the walls.
Blood sprays the ceiling.
Sun glints off a long knife.

Honestly what the heck have I been reading for the past few hours? This book, the story, the plot, the main character/characters ARE EFFED UP. I mean I guess thats bound since the plot is a psychological topic anyway - what with serial killers and what not.
I was intrigued and obviously this is what kept me reading on. I wanted to know who this psycho 'decapitator' was. I was interested in what Lane was going to discover, going to do. It was very interesting and kept me reading.
A real page-turner.
Although i only gave it three stars because i felt thats what it deserved. I didnt really like the main character Lane - even though she was intriguing. The writing style was better than okay but definitely not one of the best - there were times when the author literally just used the same sentence for something like 10 times. The plotline was crazy and kind of intense but kept you on your toes - i liked that about it.
I hate the ending. Despised it. Just dont like the way it ended. It was not satisfying for me as a reader. The whole story is complicated and dramatic and it was as if the way it ended was the easy way out. It couldve been better.
My favourite character was probably Justin and that dog lane loved.
The involvement of Dr.Issa was confusing in the story line, now that i think about it. I dont know what the purpose of him was - well i mean apart from his brother dating lane and lanes crush on him. He was weird. We barely got to know him. He is another unsatisfying issue.
I liked Victor, the stepdad. He was a good character and had a caring personality even for a child that wasnt his -Lane.
Even though Daisy was annoying most of the time, I liked that she was a character in this story. It made it a much more intriguing novel to read. I enjoyed her character development in the book. She went from an outright slut to realising how wrong her behaviour and attitude was.
I did enjoy this book. I liked how Lane was a very Get-to-the-point character. The bluntness of the writing followed that personality of hers.
I also liked Reggie her only bestfriend.
Despite its cons, I enjoyed reading 'The Killers Instinct'. I wouldn't spend my money on it however. There are some bizarre, 15+
Rated scenes in this book though that are pretty extreme, or maybe just for me.
Overall if you are interesting in murders/murderers/psychopathics/figuring out how killers think, then this is a good book for you to read.

I didn’t expect this book to be very good, given the blurb on the back, so at least I wasn’t disappointed. It took me about two hours to read, and I was bored for most of it. The story is told in the first person present by Lane, a seventeen year old high schooler obsessed with serial killers. When a killer called The Decapitator comes to town and starts contacting her directly, Lane has to keep it a secret for fear of her family getting hurt.

im kinda...disappointed. felt very underwhelmed and felt it was very similar to dexter. the rating my change at a later date after i think some more
edit: after realizing that it mentions being similar to dexter as it's selling point, i knocked a star off because I felt a lot of it was kinda a rip off of dexter.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from first page to last. It was one of the first books in a long while that has been able to make me continue turning pages without setting it down. And I never expected the surprise ending, and found myself completely terrified that Zach was in danger ha ha.
Absolutely amazing! Did not see the end coming at all!! This book kept me guessing from beginning to end. Definitely one of my favorites!
If we are comparing Lane to Dexter, then Lane is still a long way from being Dexter. He is way darker and does not hesitate to kill the bad guys. I know I should give Lane more credit as she is only sixteen and Dexter is older. However if you are going to go chasing serial killers then you better step up and put on your big girl pants. Lane was lucky to escape her encounters alive. Then when the killer was contacted Lane she still never had her guard up. The Decapitator is a creepy killer and one that I would never want to mess with.
However this book being more of a teen fiction, there was not a lot of details spent on the killings. In other words, no gore. This is why Lane did not do any killings towards the bad guys. For example, she ties up one of the bad guys, let's another one walk away before realizing they were bad, and hits another one over the head with a gun. The ending was alright. I have mixed feelings about it. If you read this book you will see why. However I thought this was a good first showing for new author, S.E. Green.

3 stars for the major twist on who the killer actually was. My jaw legit dropped. However, the rest? ehhhhhh.
The MC is so far on her high horse, if she ever falls she'll snap her neck. She thinks herself so superior to everyone else and makes sure we hear about it. Over...and over....and over... Especially as she constantly slut shames her little sister instead of, you know, looking out for her. Basically Lane ain't shit, is a legit horrible human being, and her being this masked vigilante was completely not believable.
But the serial killer plot kept me going.
