Throughout this story I was so confused as to why anyone would think that this would be romantic and describe it as such. At one point I was so stuck on this fact I felt like I was losing my mind alongside the characters. After I finished it I was still so irrationally angry with the concept of people viewing this book as 'romantic' that I kept thinking about this novel even after moving on to my next book.

Then it dawned on me, they didn't mean it as 'romantic' as in how the modern genre is defined or described, but 'Romantic' with the capital 'R' as in the period in history and literature. Then the whole of the story and everything about it both changed meaning and how I viewed it. Also made so much more sense, but because whenever I heard someone talk about it they have never clarified that difference. I went into the novel expecting sometime completely different from what I got out of it. Also that it is a 'Gothic Romance' novel would have been a good thing to keep in mind.

I do want to reread this story with the new framing in mind, but I have other books that I want to read first before I get back to this one.

I overall have mixed feelings about the book. For a while I loved it, then I hated it, then I really hated it, and now I'm left with a curious taste about it.

It's not a bad book, it's just something to get used to.

A riviting tale of how abuse begets abuse, and how trauma and violance is passed from genearaton to generation.

And I know we're not suppose to say this book is romantic... but it's pretty fucking romantic in places. A dark and distructive romanc to be sure, but romance all the same.
