If there were an option for negative stars id give it -5 out of 5. I’m surprised no one talks about all the casual racism in this book. Not a single review I've seen mentions the fact that the writer uses slurs casually throughout the book most of which are the main characters inner dialogue. not to mention several characters are referred to as nothing more then their race. The “Dickensian” style of writing is what everyone praises yet the descriptions last pages for no reason at all while barely describing anything at all. they are long and overly done just to be long. it would be different if the descriptions were actually well written and long but they are just long. None of this book was well written. the plot is slow and almost nonexistent, the characters are either terrible people or stereotypes  with no personality and the only form of “development” came through time jumps. one second hes having life problems and in dispair and the next is a time jump and is considered “developed”. Not to mention the book is supposedly based on this painting yet the painting is barely in the book. even his worry about the painting barely makes an appearance. i could go on for pages and pages about whats wrong with this book but by then it’d be as long as the goldfinch and honestly probably more fun to read. The time ive spend reading this i would have rather spent kicking rusty nails with my bare feet. i hope the only people who have to read this are violent inmates and Donna Tartt herself because i truly don't think even she’s read this. I really want to know DOES SHE HAVE AN EDITOR ??

*Test review* Amazing slow-burner with a lot of depth and emotional punch, reflecting on grief, art, and the things that make life both beautiful and tragic. One of my favorite books!

i've seen a lot of negative reviews about this book. about how it's boring, hard to get through, uniteresting. i think if your only critique of a book is that it's boring, it's not really a critique. it's a heavy book, it was written in the early 2000's and deals with a lot of trauma and unhealthy coping mechanisms. going in i thought this was a book i would have to drag myself through. i didn't find that to be true in the least. its dysfunctional and unreliable, a direct reflection of the narrator. the book takes us through a lifetime spent severely depressed and filled high with anxiety. i think if it was shorter, less wordy, it would have been so much more impersonal. it wouldn't have settled in my chest the same way. (also the characters. obviously, we're seeing it through theo's eyes so everything is tinted with his thoughts and feelings. i think boris and theo's dynamic is really important. i think andy deserved better. i think theo is a repressed gay man. i think these people were real and tangible.) take care with the topics and triggers in this book. but if it is something you think you'll enjoy, don't be deterred by negative reviews.

If a sad character isn't introduced to alcohol/drugs and crime by a charismatic alcholic(s), is it really a Donna Tartt novel?
I really loved this book, I seem to really love books with Byronic heros, wonder what that means about me. I love how well Tartt writes ppl, all the details in her book really bring the characters to life. The some interactions between Theo and his dad brought tears to my eyes how accurately they seemed to depict how it was so similar to my own dad and I.
I feel like I could also write an essay comparing this book and Interview with the Vampire. We have the outgoing and charming friend with no morals dragging a sad alcoholic down with him. However the end of this book comes to a conclusion that Louis doesn't come to till Prince Lestat: the world is a horrible place but the best thing to do is still to find your place in it.
