V is for Virgin

I quite liked this book. The idea was fresh and I enjoyed the bickering between Kyle and Val.
The ending was a bit rushed in my opinion but other than that this is a fun read.

I read this book immediately after I read and loved Kelly Oram's The Avery Shaw Experiment. Like The Avery Shaw Experiment, V is for Virgin is a fun and fast contemporary read that I devoured in just a few hours. Although I liked The Avery Shaw Experiment more, I still really enjoyed V is for Virgin.

The first word that comes to mind when I think of this book is fun. Because seriously, I had a blast reading this. It's hilarious, and there is a lot of romantic bantering that I really enjoyed. Val's relationship with Kyle isn't the adorable, healthy relationship that Avery and Grayson had in The Avery Shaw Experiment, but it's definitely interesting and compelling.

Val's campaign in this book did rub me the wrong way at some points. Val wants to wait until marriage to have sex, and she stands up for that belief. Which is awesome for her, and I think it's important to read about a character who knows what she wants and won't let anyone change her mind. However, once she began promoting abstinence in her school and her community, it started to get a bit preachy, which I wasn't so comfortable with. Val's decision to not have sex until marriage is important to her, which is great, but at some points in the book, it seemed like she was very disapproving of other teenagers who were having sex. I wish there had been more acceptance in this book of different teens' decisions, and I wish it had been more clear that Val's opinions on sex were not "right" while everyone else's were "wrong." Teenage sex is a very controversial topic, and while I understand it's a difficult topic to write about, I think this book could have handled it a little better.

But honestly, the controversial sex stuff didn't bother me that much. It didn't make this book any less fun to read, and since it is such a light read, I didn't let myself get really emotionally invested in the story, so I couldn't be that annoyed by any flaws. :)

If you're in the mood for a fun book that you can read quickly, then you should totally pick up V is for Virgin. It may not be the best thing you'll ever read, but I think you'll enjoy your experience reading it. It has comedy, romance, drama, excitement, and it has a good amount of sexy moments. :)

If you haven't read a book by this author yet, I recommend starting with The Avery Shaw Experiment, since I did enjoy it more than V is for Virgin.

i didn't love kyle (he put her on the spot in public so many times. i would have killed him.), and valerie just got to be too much (i didn't quite understand all of her reasoning behind her stance, and had similar thoughts as kyle when he asked her about them; plus all that drama with her friends because she was all swept up in being virgin val). i didn't love them together either, but i still swooned after kyle rescued val from her unfinished high school talk.

overall, i appreciated the concept (that you have a choice, and need to think about your happiness/readiness instead of ceding to someone else's), but just wished i liked the characters more and that the execution of the novel was better.

Val is just a girl trying to hold fast to her beliefs, and all of sudden, her personal beliefs become public fodder. However, instead of wallowing in self pity, she champions the cause. Along the way, she makes new friends, loses some old friends, grows and finds new facets of herself, while still holding steadfast to her beliefs.

I really enjoyed this book. It's a simple story, but I am sure it could ignite some interesting discussions. As far as the topic of sex goes, I felt Oram presented arguments for all sides, those who wait and don't wait, but her message was the same -- it should be with someone special. That's a powerful message to send out to young women and I thought it was sent without being too preachy.

The best part of this book are the characters, though. Val is awesome, I would totally want to be her friend. She is smart, pretty, athletic, socially conscience, but also fun, flirty, focused, and forgiving. Her ability to not become angry and bitter and to give the gift of grace to those who had hurt her, was what I loved most about her. Additionally, I really like her friends. They were always so supportive and knew what Val needed even when she didn't.

The ending though, really threw me for a loop. It was not what I expected, but it made me look forward to reading the next book in this series.

I give this book - 1 and a half stars.
Firstly I greatly admire anyone who is able to write a book and get it published. Just for that alone, I have awarded this book one star. And half a star because I guess it was nice the main character didn’t jump into bed with everyone, but then a teen protagonist doesn’t need to do this to make a story interesting. Unfortunately, my review takes a downturn from here on in. I really didn’t like it and I’m honestly kinda confused by all the rave reviews - did we read the same book? Maybe this book does better with younger audiences, (I'm over 30 but normally enjoy a good YHA novel).

Anyway, the below is my personal opinion (from someone who has read a lot of books about teens and who has been a teacher who deals with teens) and it aims to be constructive criticism.

The Writing: I don’t know who edited this novel but seriously there were so many grammatical errors, it was bordering on the ridiculous. There were at least one to five grammatical errors in every chapter, and I’m not even an expert. For example, how could anyone miss “It’ll get people off YOU’RE back” and "He disentangled himself FORM me"??? And these are just a couple of mistakes I found within 2 mins of searching! The book is littered with them, it was like spellcheck was the only edit done before publishing.

There is a huge lack of description. What does the band/Kyle sound like? What kind of cars are people driving? What are people wearing - besides the Gucci skirt, which is only described as being short and flattering? I mean what colour is it??? I only found out at the end of a long scene Kyle was wearing a cap, which he lovingly puts on Val's head to keep her warm! It seemed like the author’s afterthought to make him more charming. I’m not really sure what anyone looked like, except for devastatingly gorgeous, blonde, tall or short or old (in the case of her boss).

This lack of description and adjectives doesn’t help with the diversity of the novel. Besides a couple of Moron church-going kids, it’s completely lacking in any variety and diversity of personality types! Where are the people with the unpronounceable ethnic names, where are the gays, the blacks, the Hispanic students? She’s in LA for heaven’s sake!!!

Plot: There isn’t a great deal that happens. There is no great mystery (unless you include why I bothered to read to the end!) no huge drama (a boy breaks up with a girl for not sleeping with him - not exactly earth-shattering, he’s a jerk, move on!), the conflict that happens is mostly verbal arguments and there is absolutely no personal growth or change for the characters… well maybe only for Isaac, who wises up and realizes he’s not really in love with Val and Zach who apologies for dumping her. Besides them everyone else stays unwaveringly the same and it’s all fairly predictable, with an ending that seems rushed and not very exciting - Val is doing brilliantly in her political studies at Stanford (because of cause she’s a genius and might run for P is for President *gag*). Everyone, besides Val, is married and having kids and of course, Kyle is currently single and still mooning over Val after all these years.

Settings: Very little description, very little show or tell. In one part the only reason I worked out the characters were meeting for lunch in a restaurant was because a waiter interrupted them halfway through.

The Characters:
The main protagonist Val. OMG, where do I start? Basically, I found her annoyingly preachy and judgmental. She publicly shames a girl by calling her a skank in front of the whole school, she belittles Kyle for his choice of lifestyle (right or wrong) and tells Cara off for not confessing she had sex with her boyfriend Shane. Shouldn’t she be more about not labelling people and just excepting everyone as they are?

Also, Val cries constantly, she’s happy, she’s sad, she’s overwhelmed… she tears up at the drop of a hat. I mean for heaven's sake she’s 18 not a 3yr old. Which brings me to another point she is sooo indecisive - one minute she’s "no way am I going to the concert" then suddenly she’s coming up with excuses why she wants to go, then of course she goes and then complains about having gone… I mean make a choice and stick with it! She’s like this for everything, especially her feelings for Kyle - she hates him, she’s madly attracted to him and then she never wants to see him again... argh!!!

Besides all this, she is such an unrealistic, unrelatable character. Everyone wants her. Everyone loves her. And I have no clue why!!! She has no personality - she’s constantly too busy for her friends, she’s preachy, whiney and crying all the time. Her ex-boyfriend wants her back, the most popular boy in school dates her (sort of, no real details on what they do besides eat lunches together and drive across town and have a kinda dinner date), the lead singer of a famous rock group is obsessed with her (even after she constantly disses him and his music), the guy making her smoothies adores her, her boss loves her like family, the cool kids instantly except her, the reporters think she’s wonderful, the jewellery manufacturers think her designs are brilliant (and of course they sell out immediately). And there are paparazzi chasing her and tv execs who want to make a movie of her life… Is there no other news, no other celebrities? It's all eye rollingly unbelievable.

Kyle: Whom I actually kind of liked, even though he was very two dimensional and made out to be the bad boy. Again not a lot of description (besides being the hottest, sexiest guy on Earth), not a lot of backstory and he has this instant unexplainable attraction to Val - I mean come on just because a girl hates you and treats you like crap every chance she gets doesn’t make her adorably challenging. It makes her an annoying cow (to put it nicely)! He spends, what feels like a couple of hours with her, where she is mostly telling him off, lecturing and belittling him, and then he writes a whole album of hit songs for/about her???

Cara: Not sure why she would be best friends with Val. Val is always arguing with her and too busy to do anything with her… unless of course Val deliberates for 10 pages, then changes her mind, ends up going to whatever Cara has begged her to go to and then argues about Cara’s behaviour. The whole lack of adjectives again left me asking how, when and why did she and Shane get together. There’s a lot of instant, unexplainable, attraction happening in this book.

Isaac: The gorgeous, cool Mormon boy from school. Who, of course, falls for Val and dates her… apparently, because she is so brave and inspirational? Really? Again Val spends most of the time ditching him to spend time on her own projects and to be with Kyle.

Okay, so I did get a two for one deal with this book where I received the next novel in the series "A for abstinence”. So big question is will I read the next one? My answer is - I’m not in a huge rush, I need to take a break and read some brilliant writing again, but maybe, if I’m desperate and can’t find anything better to read. I’m all for giving authors second chances and I do usually enjoy stories about famous people interacting with regular people... however the character of Val has got to have become more realistic otherwise I’m putting these books in 'R is for Recycling'.

This is a very interesting book that reminds me a bit of the Meg Cabot style of young adult. It's not really a love story so much as it is a coming-of-age tale about a teenager who has decided to stay a virgin until she marries. I like the fact that there are no religious reasons behind the decision, a factor that makes the choice much more gray.

In fact, I read the whole book wondering which way the author was going to go in the end. Would our heroine and her friends decide that she'd made the right or the wrong decision to wait? The fact that the ending is left up for grabs, with no conclusion of the issue that provides the title to the book, is why I docked a star. Well, that plus the fact that the ending is almost worse than a cliffhanger in the way it sets up book two. I guess I could read A is for Abstinence and find out, but I was just too grumpy after the end of this book to continue despite finding the rest of the book outside the norm and quite interesting.

Great fun, easy to read and entertaining! The characters are well developed and interesting. There's an overall good message for teens, though it's blatant and a huge part of the story line, I don't feel like it detracts from the quality of the book at all. The execution was good and overall the writing was also good, there were some lines that stood out to me as very well written and relatable so that was nice. I don't have time right now to go into full detail but I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys romance and light hearted novels that are great for passing the time.

I had started this book since I needed a book that started with the letter V to add to one of the reading challenges on Goodreads. I had no idea what to expect from this book when I started it, but am very happy I chose to read it in the end.

I loved that Val stayed true to what she believed in, but in some way I do think the author should have challenged her a little more. I also loved the great success she had even though sometimes it was all a little too much for her. Her best friend Cara, well yeah, I kinda had a love/hate relationship with her. Oh and Kyle...sweet Kyle..pain in the ass Kyle..sexiest man in the world Kyle...I do have to admit he kinda went all out to try and win Val over, even if some of the things he did were a little over the top to say the least. I liked to see the story that developed between them and also how slowly he started to change his ways as well.

Every teen girl should also read this and parent's should be ashamed to buy this book either. If your daughter wants to read this, let her! She may come off for the better too!

¿Algo negativo? Creo que todos coincidimos que el epílogo fue algo WTF, no se entendió muy bien, demasiado apresurado. El inicio del libro un poquito flojo, los diálogos se me hicieron muy novatos pero de ahí mejora bastante.

But then Valerie says no and says she is waiting for marriage and they break up. The next day she learns that he is telling people they broke up after they had sex because she was so bad at it. When she walks into the cafeteria she sees him making out with Olivia and is sick of the shit so she stands on a table and gives this big rant calling Olivia the biggest whore in Orange County, and that she is actually a virgin. For the fall festival her and Cara are in charge of finding a band to play and Cara is set on getting Tralse to play so they head backstage at their show. Kyle basically tries to charm is way into Val's pants. Then this girl who is making out with one of the band members says she recognizes Val and calls her Virgin Val and says there is a youtube video of the cafeteria scene and then shows the whole band. Kyle is then determined to take her virginity and they laugh at the idea of playing a show for charity. A few days later Kyle shows up at the school and then says he will play the show if Val will go on a date with him, but she refuses. She comes up with the V is for Virgin necklaces to sell at the festival. There Kyle tries to get her to go on a date with him again but again she refuses and lies to him saying she'll be watching the show front row. Instead she hangs out with Issac, who ends up being a virgin, during the show. The band plays a new song that Kyle wrote for Val about wanting to have sex with her. Val ends up beginning to date Issac but this doesn't stop Kyle. He continues trying to get her, and even kisses her on national television. Months later Cara drags Val and all their friends to a going away concert for the band and promises Kyle won't do anything. But Cara lied which leds to them not being friends anymore and Kyle calls her on stage, which she goes up. There he asks for a truce and sings to her. After the show her and Issac break up, but say they will remain friends. Kyle saw the whole thing and agrees to get some dinner with her. They go through the drive thru and get dinner at her house. There Kyle kisses her and Val really enjoys it. He says how he doesn't just want her virginity, he wants a relationship. But she tells him not unless he can wait till marriage. She explains her reasoning, and they finally realize they won't work out. He says to call him if she changes her mind about waiting and she tells him to call if he changes his mind about her being worth the wait. Four years pass and she finally goes and talks to Cara, who ended up married to Shane, and they seem to be starting to work things out. She hasn't talked to Kyle since that night but on a where are they now type show he shows up to surprise her. They like hold hands and he sings a song he just wrote called Worth The Wait, and oh he has been abstient for 8 months after his fiancee cheated on him.

Quotes: "So are my persuasion skill convincing you to sport a Virgin Val original?"
Issac pretended to think about it for a moment but the corners of his mouth curved up into a smile. "No," he said dropping a twenty into the donation box Cara held. "It's all your natural charm that's doing it."

"You know I'm only doing this show tonight for you, Legs." He brought my hand to his lips. "I'd better see that pretty little face of yours smiling up at me while I sing."

And the #1 reason why Virgin Val sucks?
I still want her anyway.

He laughed at the expression on my face and then winked. "It's called, 'Worth Waiting For.'"
