It’s like “Crimson Peak” for young adults, and that is still welcome. Also, there was some good disability representation.

I rather enjoyed this story! I thought the characters were well written and I loved the found family (literally).

I found the pacing to be perfect and the magic/fantastical elements to be very entertaining!

I started out listening to the audiobook and then switched to the ebook and as much as I enjoyed the narration, I would recommend reading this as an ebook/physical book as there are illustrations that I think add a lot to the story.

There are areas of the story that I wish we got a little more information on, but that's really my only complaint. I binged this story so fast I almost wish I would have slowed down a bit so I could have spent a little more time in that world!

This book had a very creative premise and was beautiful written. The ending was a little unsatisfying, but I understand why it ended the way it did. Also it was great to see a mute protagonist and not have her muteness be cured at the end.

The way the plot unfolds it really feels like you're with Olivia as she learns about the darkness surrounding Gallant. The main character is easy to love because her main goal is just finding out who she is and what home means. This book starts as a puzzle but the missing pieces are scattered very well throughout the plot and leaves you wanting to find out what happens next. The way Schwabb writes also makes it very easy to visualize everything that is happening and does a great job at setting the proper tone.

Olivia grew up in an orphanage with nothing but her mother's very confusing journal to connect her to anyone else. Unable to speak and surrounded by people unable to sign, she's alone. Even the ghosts, that only she can see, are silent. Then, a letter arrives from a family she never knew she had.

A young adult gothic novel which features a character who struggles within an ableist institution, doesn't needlessly info dump, and doesn't waste time telling the story. Would love to see this as a movie or limited series. Quality storytelling.

This a quick little read for me, and one that I enjoyed very much. A little creepy, a little Romantic, this book is both cozy and cold. A wonderful dark companion for a rainy day, should you need one. V. E. Schwab is a beautiful master of prose, and the juxtaposition of beauty and horror in this story is fantastic. I think some of the mystery and drama could have been drawn out, but the pace certainly did not break my engagement or enjoyment!

Haunting and beautiful. V.E. Schwab is a master of atmospheric writing. The illustrations are gorgeous
and I loved the way they eventually integrate into the story
