The Doc Savage novels are formulaic but inventive, dated but still entertaining, and 100% pulp … yet better than a hell of a lot of today’s “action thrillers.” This one concerns a feud between two mountain dwelling families and the frequent interference of a weird marksman. It has all the usual intrigues and mysteries, all the stock characters and requisite fights, and—as is always the case with good pulp—it provides a very satisfying slice of mindless entertainment. It earns its stars not for literary merit, but for its exuberance.
