This was almost a dnf for me because of the age difference factor. I’m sure other folks enjoy that, but it’s definitely not one of my things. Still, I gave it a chance, and as relationships go this was quite a healthy one. I thought this book did a good job of comparing an abusive relationship vs. a more healthy one and a mindset that a survivor can have while adjusting from one to the other.
I would’ve liked to see a bit more growth on both characters’ parts. There’s a bit of a shift as they grow to trust one another, but it all still felt fairly one note.
The ending was a unique one for historical romances of this time period, and I admit I was actually quite pleasantly surprised by it. I hope more books find unique ways of making historical romances work beyond someone marrying someone’s cousin or sister. (Obviously this is the historically easiest way of doing things, but it’s nice to get a fresh take.)
Overall, I can’t say this book wowed me, but it’s a solid read and I don’t regret the time. Thanks to the author!
