I was able to be on board with the book up until he described pursuing his now-wife. I was so disgusted by his smug and arrogant retelling of the way he aggressively ignored her boundaries, her “no”s,  and her requests to go home throughout their first 24 hours together that the rest of the book felt deeply gross. He literally tricks her into coming home with him, forces her to stay the night, tries to get into her room multiple times throughout the night, congratulates himself on still kissing her despite her attempts to avoid it, and brags about it all in his book.

They’ve been married for 15+ years, so clearly it worked out for them, but his pride in how outright predatory and inappropriate his behavior was only serves to normalize some of the worst types of male entitlement.

Wow I regret reading this. Read as an audiobook on a roadtrip at the request of the driver, but still. By the end, both of us agreed that if he'd dedicated the book to Jordan Peterson at the beginning rather than thanking him in the acknowledgements at the end, we could have saved our ears from a lot.

I want REAL from him. The intro and first few little chapters made my bs radar go off. After looking at reviews, I realized this is not what I’m looking for. It’s more tall-tale, find a happy moral kind of writing, and without acknowledgement of privilege. I quit when he didn’t dig into his “charmed” life. It’s not metaphysical luck - it’s just the way society was set up for ya, Matt!

This is a pile of pretentious bullshit. Seriously, save yourself the trouble. It's vain, self-indulgent, and about as deep as a kitty pool.

In this book McConaughey:
- Tries to both downplay the domestic violence between his parents, yet also describe it in graphic detail for dramatic effect
- Downplays his previous eating disorder/ mental health crisis as a quirky phase he went through as a teenager
- Mocks disabled people multiple times. For example, imitating his (autistic?) host brother when he lived abroad
 - Lies to hospitality workers and has his brother pretended to have a disability so he could bring his pet into pet-free places
- Generally takes advantage of the kindness of others without repaying the favor. For example, he takes advantage of some well-meaning small business owner in Europe that makes them lose money, crashes their new motorbike and then doesn't repay them
- Was incredibly creepy in how he met his now-wife, manufacturing a scenario where she had to spend the night at his place
- Follows his "spiritual" journey through a series of wet dreams (which he describes in graphic detail)
- Generally acts self-righteous and condones bad behavior throughout

Thought this was a reflective memoir (a genre I'm trying to get into), but turns out this is just fictional dialogue about violence the author witnessed as a kid (so far), that he frames as learning experiences
