I didn't know what to expect from this memoir, considering I'm not a huge non-fiction fan, but what I received massively exceeded every expectation. Matthew McConaughey weaves a tale that is equal parts personal/family history, journal, and self-help book that expertly shies away from obvious tropes of all those genres. The overarching metaphor of "Greenlight," is beautifully explained and executed throughout his book. He relies heavily on metaphors, which at times can be redundant, but are more often hilarious and charming. Structurally the book is loosely chronological, but deviates many times to include an anecdote that at first seems unrelated, but somehow he ties them both together. His book gives the public a glimpse into a man who is more intense, philosophical, and wildly more interesting than any heartthrob he's played on the big screen. *Pro Tip: listen to the audiobook. The book comes alive even more so with McConaughey's signature drawl. It's like he's in conversation with the reader.
